Biography

___"Take it in your hands, child. Can you feel the power under the surface, trapped in the stone?" ___No, mama. "Yes, mama." ___"It pulses through you; it is your blood. It runs in the earth, in the soil under your feet, the air under your wings, the water in your eyes, the fire in your soul. It is you. Can you feel it now?" ___No! I feel nothing! The world is blank and cold around me; I am passing through empty, empty space. "Yes, mama, I feel it." ___"Good. This is your legacy, Aurum. This magic, this divine sense. It is your strength. It will guide you to wherever you need to be."
But it did not guide me. It left me reeling, disoriented, hiding just barely out of my reach. Close enough to see, but too far away to touch.
I am completely blind. I can't see anything, not even a claw inches away from my face. When I was born, my mother told me the clan wanted her to toss me out into the snow to freeze and die. She refused. For that, I am eternally grateful. But beyond that, there is nothing I can thank her for. My mother was the clan's seer. It was her job to predict where the food would be the most abundant, the weather the mildest, the future the clearest. It was my job to follow after her and become the next seer, the next decider of the clan's fate. There is irony in that destiny, though; blind as I am, everyone--including myself--thought I would be a poor seer. How can she see our futures if she cannot even see her own feet? my clan-mates asked, whispering behind my back. I could hear them just fine, though, despite not being able to see them. I took their words to heart. I would learn my mother's craft. I would prove them all wrong. At first, though, I was not able to prove them wrong. As well as my sight, it seemed I was born without my mother's talent for seeing. When I was a hatchling, I could not feel the magic. I couldn't even sense it; it was as far out of my reach as the world of light everyone else assured me existed. I pretended for as long as I could. Faked prophecies through the process of elimination, blamed my failures on my inability to identify what I saw. But eventually, my clan began to see through me. My mother was the one who cast me out. One night, I went to sleep snug and warm. The following morning, I woke freezing and soaked to the bone, wearing nothing but a hand-me-down shawl my mother gave me years before. At that time, once I realized what had happened, I was tempted to curl in a ball and die peacefully like I was originally intended to. But something in me, some draw I couldn't then explain, persuaded me to stand up and walk. Go, it compelled me. Go and see the world. Find your own way. And so, I did. |
