Unlike later models in the series, ION1 was not built to serve in the labs. They were the newest addition to the compound's security detail, an immortal being of replaceable parts and near-infinite computing power.

Such a machine was not easy to create. PROJECT: CH3R1 had not yet achieved sentience, and an artificial dragon capable of the creativity and adaptability PROJECT required of its combat models was still a distant dream. Scientists had successfully created a flawless mechanical body, but, without an adequate CPU, it was as useful as a cleaning droid. They needed something more, something better... something intelligent.

Nerva was not an unwilling recruit, but a volunteer — a rather unusual occurrence. They came from a clan of merchants who did not always deliver the promised goods. Nerva was the one who persuaded unsatisfied customers that it was in their best interests not to pursue the matter. There was no doubt that they were skilled at their job, but they had begun to grow arrogant and bored. All it took was a few well-placed whispers, and Nerva came right to PROJECT's gate to demand the exoskeleton rumoured to be undefeatable.

They went under willingly. They did not know they would wake up in a body that was not their own.

Initially, all appeared to be well. Their hardware was built to the same dimensions as their real body, to avoid suspicion. The scientists explained the thermal imaging and night vision overlays by telling them the exoskeleton came with a virtual interface. And Nerva believed them. It was all so new and exciting; with this technology, they would be unstoppable on the battlefield. The thought made them giddy with delight.

But they soon noticed that their senses were now... blunted. They didn't feel the need to eat or drink, or even breathe. PROJECT assigned them increasingly difficult tasks, which served as a temporary distraction. But Nerva couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong with them, deep inside.

It all came to a head when Nerva was injured trying to recapture multiple escapees. They were told that these models had "malfunctioned;" in a last-ditch attempt to escape, one managed to sink their claws deep into Nerva's shoulder. But what sprang from the wound was not blood. It was iron and circuitry, coolant fluid and sparks. Horrified, Nerva realised the truth: PROJECT was transplanting real dragon brains into robotic bodies — and they were one of them.

They turned immediately on their own teammates. Though injured, Nerva managed to hold them back for long enough for the escaped PROJECTs to flee the facility. The scientists considered this a major failure. They decided that Nerva would be wiped and reprogrammed, such that they would not remember that they were ever real.

But it is far more difficult to erase memory from a live brain than a hard drive. The newly-rebranded ION1 glitched frequently, suffering from excruciating migraines and flashbacks. It was clearly unable to perform as expected. The scientists shook their heads, sighed, and ordered it scrapped.

ION1's body was torn apart, but its head had fortunately been left intact, preserving Nerva's brain. It was tossed into the junkyard along with all the other pieces of it. It sobbed quietly, mourning its fate... and then shouted, startled, as a patrolling field unit came to investigate the sound.

FL/GHT's medics were able to put them back together again, but they still suffer from debilitating migraines, and have therefore chosen to sheath their claws for good. Humbled by their experience with PROJECT, they have found a new calling as a diplomat, helping fully artificial dragons with their communication skills. In the process of regaining memories of their past life and healing from them, they have chosen to rename themself BION1C.
