 Maple
far from the cold
Maple was born to a Gaoler clan, to high-ranking sentry parents. He was intended to grow up to join them in their patrol, but that would never happen. His eyes were strange, glowing green and trailing mist as he moved. They thought he was tainted, shade-touched or cursed or enchanted in some way, and they bared their teeth at the whelp as he lay on the cold ground. He would not have survived, were it not for Pine. Pine was a low-ranking sentry working under Maple's parents. He was not a good Gaoler- he was soft-hearted and warm, instead of the cold lawfulness that was expected of him. He defended the child from attack, taking the brunt of their claws and teeth instead. His brother Caribou was hesitant, but jumped in as well, seeing his brother in pain. They took the boy and ran. Maple does not remember this. He was too small, his eyes only just opened when his world turned against him. He only remembers the clan, a place of warmth and kindness and joy. He grew up far from the strict rules of his kind, away from the biting cold and freezing walls. He grew up not knowing what he was, really. But he grew up happy. Maple is a happy child, who loves music and toys and staying up for bonfires long after his bedtime. He loves running through the tall grasses of the Windswept Plateau, climbing the trees in the Orchard, swimming in the bay. He loves spicy food and drawing and chasing bugs. He loves Pine, who he considers his father, and Caribou and Winter, his uncle and aunt. He loves life, and his friends, and the clan who treats him with love and kindness. Pine works in the library, and Maple spends a lot of time there as well. The librarian, Crow, loves him. She invites him to curl up next to her for story time, and allows him to have snacks in her library (as long as he keeps the books clean). He doesn't read much but he likes sitting at the wide tables and doodling in his little sketchbook. Quote:
