Vishizhukel began his life with little in the way of resources beyond the apprenticeship in smithing his family could offer him. He learned quickly, but found little fulfillment in creating the sorts of things his town needed - shoes for pack animals, simple knives and tools, days upon days of identical nails. In what little spare time he had, with the scraps of the workshop, he started to craft other sorts of things. Intricate twists of iron for nothing more than decoration, knives that looked better than they cut, other trinkets that offered little in the way of practical value but much in the way of simple beauty.

To his fury, when his family discovered his stash they melted it down as though it were scrap - which, to them, it was. Metal is too valuable to waste on these frivolous trinkets, they told him. If you're working here, you can't use the supplies for this nonsense. And so he left.

With his experience he was able to find work at a foundry, but the drudgery was even worse. His job was literally to form endless copies of others' creations. The long hours left him with little energy to experiment on his own, and the sparse pay meant few resources even if he'd had the time. Still, it wasn't hard to pick up charcoal, and he sketched out his ideas on his breaks. Fanciful casts of metal that swirled like water, platters with careful etchings, thick bangles of shining gold.

"What's this?" a smooth voice asked, a gold-painted nail skimming the edge of his paper. Vishizhukel glanced up, blinking at the elegant woman who stood before him - clearly rich, bedecked in silks and delicate jewelry that had no place in a place like the foundry.

"Nothing. Just ideas." Vishizhukel watched her warily, unsure if she was some higher-up here to discipline him for spending his break time on his own projects.

But then she hummed, cocking her head. "You don't like it here, do you." Without waiting for an answer to her non-question, she continued, "How about I pay you twice what you make here, and you craft these lovely things for me? If they sell, we could make quite the business together."

"Yes," he agreed, with barely a second thought. Years later, he can't say he regrets the impulse.

♥ SHEVAT (his wife) After many years together they’re partners in more than business, though a great deal of their passion is still reserved for the craft they both love.
