| H I S T O R Y | Bubbles and sunlight shimmering like falling glitter, broken up by the soft rock of the waves. This is Oceanus’s earliest memory, crawling out of his barnacle crusted egg, watching how the sunlight danced atop the water, as he watched right below. It wasn’t always clear to Oceanus why he was so obsessed with sunlight, perhaps because it was the first thing he saw. He wasn’t able to admire the light for long, as the rest of his rambunctious litter mates toppled him over with excitement and play. Life in the Tsunami Flats was peaceful. Oceanus and his litter mates would eat and sleep to their heart’s content, and ride the undercurrents in a game they created, bouncing off the rich walls of the tide pools. Oceanus was happy, but that was it. He was content with his family and the neighbouring clans, but something was missing. He was unfulfilled, left without a clear goal. His siblings all had ambitions to delve into the Leviathan Trench once they were strong enough, or join the military and guard the Reef against Maren attacks. As they grew into adolescence, play fighting morphed to practice fighting. But Oceanus didn’t want to fight. As his siblings sharped their claws against rock and gnashed their teeth at each other, Oceanus was off on the sidelines, helping to free fish snagged in coral. It’s not that his family made him feel like an outcast, he just was. He, a flower, was born into a lineage of thorns. When he wasn’t patching up his siblings or aiding nests, Oceanus was on the edge of the Flats, watching the sunlight dance on the water. And sometimes he’d let his head breach the surface, to feel the warm rays against his scales. He didn’t belong in the dark abyss of the Currents, he was needed up there - in the light of the world. And so he went, with no retaliation from his family. Oceanus was nervous about his decision at first, but when he saw the Sun cresting over the cliff, in the sky bluer than any ocean, he knew he’d come home. |
