Ensnared and chained,
sinking in the depths,
profound desolation
imbued with desperation,
enslaved to one
you had once trusted, loved.
Ruin surrounds you,
painfully stabbing you
as you scream internally,
reminders of all you are not.
When all is lost,
ready to resign,
dignity shattered away,
a light shines from above,
help arrives, an unlikely ally,
on wings of colorful glory.
Drums thunder from afar,
signalling the war to come,
one that would span
a time far too long.
When the dust settles
and the light shines again,
freedom has been won,
and independence wrought.
Never again
shall you go down that path.
Never again
will you let someone shame you.
Upon your skin,
a tattoo that sings
of all sorrow and bliss.
Upon your soul,
nothing and no one
will wrest you from the sky.
