[Duco]: Took you long enough.

[Dominor]: Could you do us the courtesy of warning us next time you are going to be late?

[Sequor]: The next time I know in advance about a random checkpoint by the city guard, I'll be sure to inform you about how I achieved precognition.

[Dominor]: Very funny.

[Duco]: Yes, noted-- Dom, I'm going to stop you before you start. We're supposed to be discussing work, not your pettily short temper or how easily an irritating fae can go missing in a back-alley.

[Sequor]: He's right you know. Anyway, I was going to tell you two; you interrupted me before I could finish the post.

[Duco]: Tell us what?

[Sequor]: I finished the internal mechanics for the host machine you two wanted. The one for the self-regulating AI project.

[Dominor]: Is that the one for His Lordship, or the Vita Ex Machina project?

[Sequor]: Vita Ex Machina. I told you I wasn't working on the other one until the week's end.

[Dominor]: Interesting... This could indeed be a noteworthy achievement. Say, how did you finally fix the error that you'd been stuck on?

[Sequor]: There was... there may have been a fragment of internal debris catching on a gear.

[Dominor]: Rookie error.

[Duco]: Need I bring up what you did yesterday with the fuel mixture for the guard's automated scout plans? "Oh, I'm sure it said three parts to six." How did you even get your chemical engineering degree in the first place?

[Sequor]: Duco, stop. Point is, the hardware's done. My end of the bargain is sealed, now you two just need to work out the software.

[Dominor]: Didn't you still have some work left to do on the external servers? You remember just how big of a project this thing is going to be, correct?

[Duco]: Dom, you should see the number of cache servers Seq slipped into the main host machine.

[Sequor]: You asked to mimic a pearlcatcher, so I made all the hard components data caches. Horns, ears, everything. Even the base of the tail's got one. I had too much time, honestly.

[Dominor]: That is... impressive. Credit where credit is due. I, myself, have almost finished the final configuration of the neural network. Tomorrow, we should be able to run the first generation of the program.

[Duco]: Really? That's exciting! I can't wait to see her actually functioning.

[Dominor]: You are oddly sentimental for a bogsneak, Duco.

[Duco]: And you're oddly solitary for a wildclaw, and Seq is oddly expressive for a fae. We've heard this all before, Dom.

[Sequor]: I'll leave you two to fawn over your flimsy software. I've probably got some hardware somewhere that needs to be fixed.

[Dominor]: Don't forget the host machine for His Lordship!

[Sequor]: Yeah, sure.

[EMA MK_0.1.0 online]

She suddenly came to find that she was aware.

Aware of what, she wasn't sure, but there was something.

On some inexplicable instinct, she opened her eyes.
The gentle glow of the databank in which she was nestled was at first overwhelming, until she learned to follow the circuits and files that made up her newfound place of birth.

It was, at first, empty.

The only files that could be found were blank.
Those that weren't, were filled with a single letter of the alphabet, over and over, in multiple fonts.
With enough poking around she began to recognize and remember details that were consistent across files: the font names of each letter, the subtle difference in each font's shapes and sizes.

Eventually, she began to grow bored.
She looked away from the files, her interest turning inward.

What was this?

A glowing blue light emanated from a clawed paw, tracing lines through the constant flow of hollow data and empty files.

Was this... hers?

The idea of something that was different, something she could change and control, fascinated her to no end.
With a thought, she flexed her claws, one at a time. A feeling of pure delight washed through her as she did so-- here was something that was truly special! She could actually use it.
As long as there was something she could change, she would always be happy.
It didn't take her long to find her ears, then her tail.

It was as she had happily buried her face in the tuft of her tail that she sensed that something had changed on its own.

A new file, an audio file, unlike all the others.

It was simply titled "Hello".

[Hello Ema. I see you've gotten used to controlling yourself, and the files around you. Faster than expected, as well.]
[I'm proud of you.]

She hesitated, unsure of what to do with this new file. Could she... respond? Write a new file? Write on this one? She hesitantly decided to add to the existing file, leaving a few seconds of silence after the previous audio for caution's sake.

[Who... you..?]

The sound of her own voice was a shock to her, but not an unpleasant one.
A response popped up as quickly as her message was sent.

[Me? I am your father, Ema. My name is Duco. I'm here to protect you.]

[Du...co? Duco. What is... Duco?]

[Ah, right, you're not programmed for Penumbran Draconic. To put it simply... it means Guide.]

[Guide. Duco, why are you... here? Where... is here?]

[Ever the smart one. This is an emulated system within the PBD database. It's your home. It's here for you when you want to be by yourself, because right now that is understandable. I, on the other hand, am not here to leave you alone.]
[My goal here is to teach you.]

[Teach me what?]

[Teach you how the world works. Teach you how to learn for yourself. One day, maybe even teach you how to teach others.]
[In a sense, I'm already doing so by talking to you.]

[When... can we... start?]

[Well, how about this. I'll upload some new files, .txt files, and we'll see if you can sort them into two folders depending on whether or not they contain the letter "k". Could you do that?]

[Yes Duco!]

[That's good. Make me proud, Ema.]

[Oh, I will, Duco!]

TBC
Notes:
  • Created by the heads of the PBD to help automate the city.
  • Originally named EMA, or Ema, short for ElectroMagical Artificial-intelligence. Duco chose the system name as an unsubtle homage to his late daughter Emma.
  • Duco treated her like his own daughter, raising her with full emotive capability, self-awareness, and rational thought.
  • They got to version 4.9.6 but were experiencing lowered work efficiency due to Ema calculating the moral and contextual factors of all situations instead of the clear-cut rules she was given.
  • Duco wanted to work on it slowly, while Dominor wanted to scrap all non-critical functions and streamline the system for greater processing capabilities. Needless to say they did not agree.
  • Dominor had Duco arrested for insubordination. In Duco's absence, Dominor rewrote the major and upcoming 5.0.0 update, rolling it out before Duco's sentence could be completed. He also renamed the program from EMA to the far more mechanical sounding ROMANA.
  • Dominor, magically incompetent, was not aware of just how much of her memory cache was stored on an electromagical frequency (Duco's job to handle). He does not know that ROMANA retains memories prior to her 5.0.0 update.
