The smell of charred flesh slowly fills the room, amplified by the suffocating stream of smoke wafting towards the lights in the ceiling.

"Aw, ****!"

Against every other dragons' wishes and advice Avery is sucking on their charred claws in a moment, almost crying at the pain and almost gagging at the taste of their (horribly, horribly damaged) insulated gloves. It's not the first time something like this has happened this week; it's not even the first time it's happened today. Tears of pain are starting to become tears of disappointment and anger as the dragon curses more, each utterance getting quicker and quicker until it just sounds like one long mutter of sorts. Avery's a shoddy engineer. Even if they wanted to hate to admit it, they couldn't; they've told themselves it way too many times.

They've never known anything but Lightning. No other flight seemed to be in their genes, and so every dragon seemed to come to the same conclusion; Avery would be an absolute natural at anything mechanical. They never really messed up enough for anyone to notice the help they really needed, and as a result Avery was sent into the workforce without any questions- or any real training. They tried to avoid any job too hard (as in, anything that couldn't be solved by looking over a coworker's shoulder), but it became all too apparent that method wouldn't work forever.

So now they work, unsure, and with burned clawtips, wondering if they should speak up, just leave it all behind, or keep going as is. They've started to wonder if their real passions lie elsewhere, or if they just haven't learned enough to truly understand and enjoy the engineering they're already doing...
