HAIKU
POETIC // CREATIVE // CALM
-HE/THEY-
|
Haiku is a natural-born poet - he's been writing and reciting poetry since he was a hatchling. He chose his name himself, wanting to reflect his lifelong passion, although he prefers freeform poetry over haiku. His poems often draw inspiration from the world around him, from morning dew on the grass to the soft glow of a lantern at midnight. This comes easily to him, as he's always been capable of seeing the beauty in anything and of translating that beauty into words. Such natural creativity isn't traditionally fostered in the Ice Flight, so he left his birth clan in search of a place where his craft would be more highly valued. Now he's the Lanternlight Clan's resident poet, and he stores his scrolls in a building that has come to be used as the clan's library, which he tends to when he's not busy working on his poems. One of Haiku's favorite sources of inspiration is flowers, which never cease to amaze him. His birthplace in the foothills of the Cloudscape Crags fostered very little plant life, so most of his early experience with flowers involved nothing more than a few sketches in books and journals. The first time he saw a real flower - a gift from a visiting nature dragon - he was astounded and greatly inspired by its sheer beauty, and the memory is among his most cherished. |

-Aesthetic Amber leaves drifting across glassy water; petals falling softly from trees; the light from a full moon; leaves rustling in the breeze; koi fish circling in a pond; blowing on dandelions; the shine of fresh ink on paper; the distinct scent of old books; cold alpine streams; the jingling of wind chimes; feather pens; calligraphy |
Home-
Haiku makes his home on the top floor of the library building, where he lives alongside his friend and roommate Wasurenagusa. His room is always meticulously clean, filled with the sweet scent of gardenia flowers and sometimes lemon cakes, which he likes to eat while writing. There's a desk below the window, covered in flower vases and inkwells, and across the room stands a neatly-organized shelf with a pillow-covered futon beside it. |
When he was young, Haiku cared about what the world thought, and he knew it was displeased. What little of the world he knew was, at least; he was sure the Southern Icefield itself disapproved of his overflowing creativity, and that wasn't a particularly nice feeling. The Ice Flight wasn't a place where he could freely pour his heart onto a page without having to worry about such things, about whether his friends and family and everyone and everything he knew would look down on him and try to stifle him. So he left. He left as soon as he was old enough to make the treacherous journey to the main continent, and as he touched down on the shores of the Ashfall Waste for the first time something felt... different. It took him three days to pin down just what that something was, and then, as the cliffs of the Sunbeam Ruins rose above the desert below him, glowing orange in the sunset, it finally clicked. He was no longer surrounded by that suffocating feeling of disapproval he'd grown so accustomed to. He didn't know if the world would care about him or his poems, and after growing up in a place where creativity was stifled in favor of being cold and analytical, it was a strangely liberating feeling. He was free. He could finally become a poet, just like he'd always dreamed. |

Dragon Frame from HerexxxCoding By SilverImagines

Haiku is fascinated with the art of flower arrangement, or "ikebana", especially since he has learned that flowers have a special language all their own and can have various meanings separately or within arrangements. He considers these gorgeous pieces of art to be akin to a well crafted poem.
