Biography

history and lineage Pair lore by Xemriss #44020 // Hatchery Benek, due to his professions as a tomb raider and archaeologist, is frequently on the move. He's extremely strict and paranoid, and tends to be emotionally distant and oblivious to others' wants and needs. Being obsessed with greed leads him to unintentionally putting all other duties on the back burner and disappearing for weeks at a time without communicating his whereabouts to anyone (even Betu). He doesn't see the point of confiding in anyone, nor is interested in affiliating with any clan. What if they get wind of his discoveries? He agrees to nest with Betu solely to keep her busy, and isn't aware or curious of what actually happens to his offspring since he disappears for so long between clutches.
~~~
Betu, arguably just as emotionally cold as her mate, is on a quest to replace her broken pearl, which happened while she enacted her escape from a prison during a bad snowstorm in the Icefields. Her quest is the only reason tying her to Benek; she doesn't truly care for him or his work, and his disappearances are a welcome relief. When her hatchlings regurgitate their new pearls, she immediately takes and closely inspects them. If she considers one to be 'perfect', she keeps it for herself, but if the pearl doesn't meet her standards she destroys it. She doesn't care about the hatchlings themselves since she abandons them at the first chance she gets, either with other dragons or left to fend for themselves in the wild. The hatchlings' lives tend to be quite the struggle if they're able to survive. a new chapter "what do i do now?" Staring down at her first clutch, now hatched- now alive in a way they weren't before, Aseidu can only find it within herself to feel regret. She ignores the excited chattering of their father as he whips out a quiver of painted sticks, cooing as he turns the hatchlings this way and that. Out of the corner of her eye she can see the coatl consulting a book filled with transparent swatches, placing the sticks under each page, shaking his head. Books are so much easier than dragons. They are simple. You read them, and that’s that. There’s subtext sure, and the plot may twist and turn- but there is a surety about books. There’s a purpose to writing a book. Dragons are confusing and complicated, intentions hidden at worst and senseless at best. Books are all straight lines and character arcs. Written to reflect the world but in a more ordered fashion. To give reason to the unreasonable. Asiedu wishes that the world were like books. It would be so much easier to traverse. Aseidu glances back at the hatchlings and their father, who looks a little panicked as they begin gagging, readying to spit out their pearls. She waves at him as if to say “don’t worry” and just hopes he gets the message. She finds while watching the three hatchlings form their pearls, she had instinctively reached for her own pearl, as strange as it is. Her pearl isn’t quite a pearl, but simply a single shard that had escaped her mother’s wrath. It sits in the middle of an orb made of clear residue- the last of her nacre, flecked with tiny bits of opalescence. She has never been able to add to her pearl since then. No longer able to produce the thick liquid that most pearlcatchers layer their pearls with, Asiedu's pearl is small; scratched in parts- where careless claws grasped as she desperately fought her way through life after she was left to die. The rest of her pearl is worn smooth with time, leaving the surface glassy. It's better this way, she thinks. Books are so much more reliable for rememebering things. Asiedu doesn’t hate her 'pearl', for all the looks she gets. In fact she thinks its somewhat beautiful; the cloudy shimmer of pearlescence within the transparent orb is quite enchanting. The center of her pearl, however, is a different story. It serves as a reminder of that day, of the dragon who took everything from her in one fell swoop. Aseidu can even recall the look on her mother’s face when she first hatched. She remembers she looked… happy. When she was younger, Asiedu used to take solace in that fact; that maybe her mother actually held some sort of love toward her children. As she grew up, she realised that what she saw in her mother's eyes was not happiness in seeing her children hatching- it was excitement. Excitement for the possibility of finding a pearl to replace the one she lost. Sometimes she thinks she’s glad her mother didn’t deem her pearl worthy to take. This way, she has at least a semblance of who she is- an anchor in this chaotic world. She thinks of her siblings that did not have the same luxury and shivers. Looking back toward the father, she watches idly as the hatchings regurgitate their pearls, and as the coatl regurgitates his lunch a little ways away. She walks over, carefully stepping around stacks of books. Asiedu inspects the hatchling’s pearls, lingering for just a moment as her claws gently pass over each of them. After checking both the hatchlings and their pearls, she leaves them be. Tuckered out from the effort of existing, the three fall asleep relatively quickly. As Aseidu looks over her hatchling’s sleeping forms and feels a warmth blooming throughout her chest, she thinks that maybe- just maybe- there are some things books just cannot convey, and does her best to etch this moment into her limited memory.
