"Are you afraid of the dark?" ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Little is known about the mysterious Skydancer who showed their face one quiet, snowy summer day; they arrived with their face covered by a scarf, and their eyes clouded by fear and something else sinister yet indescribable. Akai- or Aki, as they've come to be nicknamed- is a silent sort, never speaking save for through writing or their hands and wings signing the statements they wish to convey. A thin scar is visible on their throat, which they refuse to acknowledge. Their feathers are as dark as night, save for stripes of red. Often, even the bits of color are concealed by armor that appears to be made of some mysterious metal that hasn't been located on this planet quite yet, holding the strangest of properties within its structure. Aki has previously confirmed that they are not of this planet, and rather, a society far away located deep in a distant galaxy, where wars wage near constantly. In a way, this place is more a home to them than it should be. They fit right into the cold, despite being of the Arcane, as if it doesn't touch them at all. The snow is nostalgic to them, of course. Rumors among the younger mercenaries pin them as being 'thousands of years old', 'a ruthless warrior like no other', 'possessed by the Shade itself', and other such things; they have not confirmed nor denied these claims, but their personality does not seem to befit such statements. Aki is a shy, timid dragon, but a kind one who goes out of their way to help whenever an opportunity is given. One cannot deny that when they venture into battle, they become an entirely different person, with pitch black shadow-formed arms erupting from their back and tearing their opponents to pieces with zero mercy. Despite their reluctance to speak of their past, they've often told stories that seem to be attempts at conveying their experiences without outright claiming them as their own. They speak of distant war, their comrades and siblings in arms, ruthless military dictators controlling their every move, and a final conflict that led them to crash down to the surface of this planet. Being rehabilitated was not easy, but it was a necessary step to find their lost squadron, who is said to have the same abilities and prowess as them. Until that time comes, they've allowed themself respite in the form of ravenously studying everything this planet has to offer- geography, climate patterns, cultures, and all. Aki is a fledgling author of research papers and wonderful tales alike, and despite their shrouded past and dubious control over their own body, they're a valued member of the mercenary team regardless.

Acknowledge yourself

Was it the smell of a library book? Or listening to the crickets at night? Maybe it was strumming a guitar, or walking barefoot in the grass. Try to recreate those experiences of simple pleasure. Speak up for yourself Choose a trusted soul and voice the unspeakable: “I need help.” “I am afraid.” “I haven’t felt like myself in awhile.” There is something about voicing the burden that makes it lighter. Give the people close to you a chance to support you. Take the pressure off yourself What are you telling yourself about your parenting skills? What are you telling yourself about your appearance? What are you telling yourself about your long to-do list? Now try setting more realistic expectations. Lower the bar; let something go. Ban the word “should” from your vocabulary today. And when you lay down in bed tonight, ask yourself, “Did I show up?” If the answer is yes, that is enough. It’s more than enough. Notice the good in yourself Take a moment to recognize any tough obstacles you’ve overcome, or lessons you’ve learned—and think about how far you’ve come. Then try to see yourself through the eyes of those who love you. They don’t see imperfections, failings, and mistakes. They see love, never-failing love. Try to see it too. |
