Zhanya is a very unusual dragon. Nobody knows exactly how old he is, not even Zhanya himself, because most of the memories of his life have long since faded away. He may well be centuries old. But he is not unaging or immune to injury or sickness. Whenever Zhanya dies, he regenerates, reverting into a hatchling and beginning his life anew. While he may have vague memories of his former life, more often than not he remembers nothing, and relies on his keen sense of smell to remind him of who his friends are.

What he does have an incredible memory for are herbs, potions, and a wide variety of illnesses and diseases. He can tell what's wrong with a dragon just by smelling them, and he remembers all the other times he's cured the same sickness. He can track down and harvest the herbs needed to cure them just by knowing the kinds of places they grow. And Zhanya knows a startling number of potions, brewed with plants and tufts of fur and a thousand other ingredients; potions that can heal wounds, cure diseases, and even alter a dragon's appearance and breed. He is often responsible for creating the potions that protect modern breeds from the transformative effects of the Parr'zai Crystal.

Despite his important position within the clan and the essential care he provides, Zhanya can make other dragons feel uneasy at times, especially when he's newly regenerated into a hatchling. There's something unnerving about such old eyes in a young dragon, particularly when he's having trouble reaching into his cauldron. He also seems rather distant and detached, seeming to struggle to make close friends. He knows he will outlive them, and his neverending cycle of death and rebirth creates a disconnect between him and the rest of the clan. Zhanya is often almost completely oblivious to just how much some other dragons care for him, particularly Hadan.

Zhanya doesn't speak much, and tends to keep to himself except when he's needed. While he might have a playful streak when he is a hatchling, he rarely acts on it, preferring to stick to his assigned role within the clan. He never knows quite how to behave around other dragons, as he is always either vastly older than them, or so much younger. Perhaps he is both.

Fortunately, Zhanya has an army of little helpers, with whom he genuinely does have a close relationship: a swarm of tiny frogs and toads. They hop around his den, climbing up to shelves out of his reach, fetching ingredients, and providing their toxic secretions, which in tiny doses are powerful medicines. Zhanya knows every amphibian by its scent, but they are given new names every time he regenerates. The only exception is Nihat, a Reedjumper who has lived just as long as Zhanya. They are so close that when one of them regenerates, the other often does as well; it's not uncommon to see a tiny, fluffy Zhanya carefully tending a tadpole swimming in a jar.

Zhanya's favourite part of the clan's territory are the Ash'zai swamps to the west, and not just because it's where many of the best herbs grow. He loves the neverending cycle of life and death in the swamp. Things live there, life constantly bubbles within it's waters... and then it dies, sinking into the muck and bringing with it the scent of death and decay. It also helps that it's an ideal home for frogs and toads, and when a member of Zhanya's swarm dies, he will seek out frogspawn in the murky pools, selecting those that smell like friends.
