It was a foggy day, and the harbor was almost deserted, save for an idly smoking dockworker and an artist who’d come to paint the seascape. As the artist scanned the horizon, he noticed a dark shape sailing into the fog.

“Wouldn’ worry if I was you,” drawled the dockworker when the artist evinced concern. “That’s the Dragonfish—fastest trading ship hereabouts, and with Captain Aquilia in command, there’s naught to fear.”

“Of course—Captain Aquilia. Who hasn’t heard of her?”

The two dragons exchanged nods, and the dockworker continued, “Ayup, fog like this’d be a curse to many other captains, but not Aquilia. She’s weathered worse, I reckon. The Dragonfish’ll return right as rain, you’ll see.”[/i]

Flamecaller’s Reign
Day 3

This unseasonal fog remains persistent, and based on observations made by myself and the crew, magic is afoot, probably some enchantment gone wrong. Either that or someone’s playing tricks with the weather. Not a problem for us, but there are always idiot mariners blundering around out there, which could equal a collision and damage, et cetera. I swear, whoever’s responsible for this is going to get the stuffing beaten out of them.

Day 5
We managed to catch the wayward weather-worker! —a scrappy Lightning Fae, no doubt his mind’s been addled from too many explosions. The tiny scoundrel’s been running an “experiment”, and he crashed into our rigging like a mad little bat. I was going to give him a good thrashing, but Phoenix suggested turning him in to the coastal sentinels instead. Got a nice amount of gold for our trouble. They weren’t going to compensate us at first, but after I pointed out they’d failed miserably at their jobs and that we were going out of our way to secure the waters for everyone, they were only too happy to comply. As they should be.

Day 10
Trip has been uneventful since last report. We are currently sailing past the Shifting Expanse. I project that we will reach our destination four days ahead of schedule.

Day 11
Saw a Spiney Whale today. It cut across our brow, or should I say our bow cut across it. I sent some of the crew to retrieve any edible bits it might’ve dropped. We have more than enough provisions for a round trip, but a change from the usual rations is always welcome. Preserved herbs, ye gods. More appropriate as a garnish than as a proper meal! I might try some of that whale meat myself. It’ll probably taste appalling, but it’ll be better than seasoning myself like a stuffed perch.

Day 12
Maren ahoy! and spoiling for a fight too. The crew are willing to meet them head-on, but I’ve ordered them to stand down. This conflict might be turned to our favor yet.

—16:00
Informed the Maren that the Spiney Whale’s death had been an accident. I had to talk rather fast at first, but they soon took my word for it, especially since they recognized that they were in bigger peril from us than we were from them. After that, convincing them to allow us safe passage was hatchling’s play. It would have been a trifling matter for us to mop them up, but I’m more concerned about the perishability of the cargo. As of now, I calculate we will reach our destination three days ahead of schedule.

Day 17
Land ahoy! The Southern Icefield is in sight. A storm is bearing down upon us from the north as I write this, and the crew are making preparations to go below, but it should not hinder us by too many hours. We shall make port in the afternoon, well before sundown.

The Dragonfish caused quite a stir as she sailed towards the harbor. Her sails were still tattered from the storm and there were some odd stains across the bow; the fact that cleanup operations had obviously been attempted made them more disquieting.

The merchant had heard of Aquilia before and was actually rather nervous about meeting her. So it was a pleasant surprise when she greeted him in a brisk, businesslike manner. He inquired about the trip as the goods were being transferred to his warehouse.

“It looks like you’ve had a rough trip. Can I offer your crew the hospitality of my lair?”

Aquilia snorted, and for a moment the merchant caught a glimpse of the sarcasm she was infamous for. “No, our mages will make repairs tomorrow morning. We’ll set sail again by noon.”

Sure enough, by noon the next day, the sails were magically whole again; the bow was pristine once more. The hold had also been refilled, this time with trading goods from the Southern Icefield.

It had been a very profitable venture, and Aquilia was satisfied. In her cabin, she sat down before a fresh canvas. That morning’s sunrise was still fresh in her mind—if the return trip was as peaceful as it normally was, she would be able to finish a new painting...

“Captain?” A knock on the door, and then Phoenix poked her head inside. “A waterspout’s forming off the eastern coast of the Icefield. Shall we change course?”

“Change course? When this sorry lot’s so clearly lacking in mettle? No, Phoenix, we’ll steer a little closer. The crew needs further instruction on dealing with inclement weather.”

Phoenix frowned, but despite her disapproving expression, she knew and trusted Aquilia’s capabilities. “Aye-aye. The crew won’t like it...but you are the captain, after all.”

Aquilia smirked as she glided out of her cabin. “Damned right, Phoenix. Really, I don’t know what you’d all do without me.”
