Description: When the dragon awakens, they can no longer feel the pain in their limbs, nor the dryness of their throat. Their mind still retains an odd haze, though it's a markedly different sensation to the haze they experienced when passing out in the desert heat; the last thing they remember. Beneath their head they can feel a pillow covered by animal hide, and they can smell a fire, maybe even something cooking. Craning their neck to look to the source brings the dragon's attention to a Pearlcatcher sitting down, tending a fire, and, sure enough, cooking. The Pearlcatcher's odd eyes catch the dragon's gaze, and a gentle smile (one more comforting and genuine than almost any the dragon's ever seen; one which vividly reminds the dragon of their mother's smile, their mate's smile, their baby nephew's smile, all at once) greets them. "You're awake," the Pearlcatcher coos, with a comforting drawl accenting their sweet-as-honey voice. "Glad to see it-" they gently rattle their pan, "-cause I just started making pancakes." The dragon lifts their head before sitting up entirely. "Pancakes? I-" The scent fills their nose, and memories of sleepy mornings with their mate flood back, as they remember their touch, their voice, their tired laughter. Tears start to well in their eyes, with that smell being so distinct that those pancakes can't possibly have any other recipe. "-I... love those. That's my favorite food." The Pearlcatcher gently nods and just keeps cooking. "Name's Ranger." They hold up a claw as the dragon begins to introduce themself. "No need, my friend, no need. I already know who you are. See, when I saw you out there... I just knew I couldn't leave you behind." The dragon fidgets in place, and tears just keep falling. They can't place why, but any fear of embarrassment is gone around this Pearlcatcher- this Ranger. Their voice cracks and shakes as they respond. "I-I can't thank you enough, really, I... I'd be a goner without you. It was a mistake to come out here, I miss my mate, I miss my family, I-I just want to go home..." Ranger's smile fades as a new sort of sincerity flashes in their eyes. "Don't... don't get ahead of yourself here, friend. I'm never quite the bearer of good news, unfortunately." They serve one plate of pancakes and hand to it to their guest, also offering a flask of syrup. The dragon, quietly shaken, lets Ranger pour it, rather than taking it. "I'm no average dragon. More of an usher, really. For lost souls like your own, far too far from home. Lost far too early." The dragon begins to quiver as tears fall harder and they struggle not to hyperventilate. "I... I... I can't... I'm..." They break down sobbing, and Ranger goes to sit beside them, quietly reassuring them as the dragon barely manages, in a whisper so soft that no dragon should be able to hear it, "Am... Am I dead, Ranger?" Ranger softly nods, wrapping one arm behind the dragon to gently pull them closer. "I always hate to say it. I always do. But sometimes dragons... They're too far from any clan. Wouldn't get buried in any sorts of satisfactory time... They need someone else to help them along. Tell 'em that everyone is gonna be okay. Your mate, your mother, your nephew, your sister... It'll be hard. But they'll make it. They'll remember you just like they knew you; loving you. Never blaming you." The dragon just keeps crying, leaning into the Pearlcatcher's grasp. Ranger's voice cracks. "You... You don't gotta eat, if you don't want. And we can wait here long as you need. Look at whatever you want to. No rush." The dragon lets Ranger take the plate and put it down, before hugging them. Ranger quietly returns the act. "No rush at all."
