The Cherry Blossom Prince
Heir to a kingdom lost to time
Heir to a kingdom lost to time
Born to a large kingdom, and an inheritance that would turn the most miserly and power-hungry dragon green with jealousy this prince was a gentle soul. He was beloved by his future subjects, and it was hard to conceive that even with his good fortune anyone would want to harm him. The magic of the Gladekeeper that coursed through his veins allowed him to grow magnificent gardens and beneficial plants for his kingdom.
In the Everbloom Gardens, he cared for his plants and learned everything a young prince should. He learned how to rule, how to duel, how to pick staff and organize events. Once the young prince became king, no one had any doubt the kingdom would enter a golden era of piece and prosperity.
To celebrate their prince, every year the kingdom held a lavish birthday celebration. Flowers crowded the streets, and dragons of every age and breed took part in the parade. Of course, the main attraction was the prince himself. He walked the streets with the parade and spoke to the people. It was his favourite time of year. That was until one year.
One year during the parade, a hatchling dropped to the dirt path. Dragons rushed over to see what was wrong and found that the hatchling had fallen asleep. No one was much concerned about this once the youngster had been moved from the parade path until it happened to another child and another. Soon the elderly dragons were dozing, and the adults felt their eyelids grow heavy.
Without knowing what sort of magic or poison caused his people to drop into slumber, Cerasus took to the sky. He did not even stop to say goodbye to his parents, he needed to find help and fast. Alas, the poor prince was not immune to the sleep inducing pollen that drifted from the flowers and soon his eyes and his wings were heavy with fatigue. Fearing he would crash, he soared higher and higher until the winds took him to the Twisting Crescendo. He would have flown further, all the way to the domain of the Arcanist but at last the prince could not stay awake and he too succumbed to sleep.
The prince was sheltered by the kindness of the dragons who found him, and harbored his sleeping form but rumors grew of his origins grew thick and fast, and soon dragons came from all over to wake him. Some tried yelling, some tried pushing, a few brave souls even nipped at his wings but nothing could stir so much as a whisker. As the years passed, the dragons stopped coming, and the sleeping form of the cherry blossom prince was all but forgotten by everyone except the clan who harbored him.
Centuries passed and the prince's kingdom was over run by the unruly plants of the Viridian Labyrinth. His subjects faded into obscurity and eventually turned to dust beneath the emerald leaves. All hope seemed lost for the prince. True love, however, takes its time.
From the shadowed woods a knight roamed across the land. Born to a place just as bowered and alive as the green gardens of the prince's home, he traveled the land searching for someone or something to set his heart at ease. Eventually he came to the Twisting Crescendo and heard the story of the prince.
The knight's heart wept at the tragedy, and he decided to try his hand at waking the prince. Bowing to the prince, the knight sat down beside him and told him stories of the many adventures that the knight had experienced. Tales of love, and of battle, tales of honor and cowardice but when day had turned to night, the prince hadn't stirred.
The knight refused to leave the prince and slept by his side. The next day arrived and undeterred the knight began his stories again. These were stories of family and friends, of learning and of growth, stories of belonging. He spoke of his parents and of the place he had grown up in, deep in the brambles of the Shadowbinder's domains. These stories drifted over the sleeping prince and not a claw stirred.
A second night found the pair together. The sleeping prince and his faithful knight. The clan urged the knight to move on and leave the prince, for he had not awoken in living memory, though he looked young. The knight was undeterred and told his stories for a third day. These stories were different. These stories were not the knight's stories but instead stories that made the knight. He told fables and fairy tales, myths and legends. He told of knights and princes, of spells and curses, and of course, of happy endings.
The knight settled down for a third time on the cold stone as the sun set on the third day, when a voice spoke, raspy and weak from disuse. "Tell me another."
And the knight did.
The next morning when the sun came up, the prince told the knight his story, and begged the knight to accompany him back to his kingdom to rescue his people. The knight agreed but when they arrived, there was nothing to find. The dragons the prince had known and loved were lost to time and in their place large flowers that clouded the air with pollen. The pollen caused the prince's eyelids to grow heavy once more.
Fearing for his love, the knight guided them far away from the labyrinth. Some place where the two of them could live in peace and happiness all their days. They found a home in the Southern Icefield, and once they had a den, the knight finally gave the prince True Love's First Kiss.
