Title: Elder (pre-founding name "Earthshaker-Shale-Kind," name chosen at Grit Clan founding: Eshak)
Duty: Pastkeeper of Laws, Census-Taker

Mate: Siizhuka, after he saved Vermillionwing's hatchlings
Battlebond: -

Origin: Sasha's Clan
Blood: (exempt)

Intent: to keep Grit Clan's record tablets in as exhaustive and precise a manner as his eloquent and illustrious skills can possibly manage, but, also, simultaneously, at the same time, be brief. He amply rises to the task of maintaining a high degree of brevity with exquisite aplomb, all his Snapper allies insist upon it

to call each clan member into the Cavern of Records and chisel into the Clan Census their Title, Duty, Mate, Battlebond, Origin, Blood, and Intent

to take notes during Grit Council meetings

to dissuade his assistant Lark from chasing so many fads. What's the sense in jotting vital records down on dried-up wood pulp that tears at the touch of a single claw and can float away at the flap of a wing? Heavy stone tablets will never go out of style

to depart from Grit Clan after Dia recommended that they relocate to the region of Trotcliffe

The Founding Laws of Grit Clan

  • The Grit Council dictates the laws of Grit Clan. The three Grit Councillors are the Clanhelm, the Broodmatron, and the Safeguard.
  • The Clanhelm must name or rename new clan members.
  • The Clanhelm may banish any dragon on grounds of lawbreaking or disrespect.
-The Rites of the Clanhelm, self-endowed
  • The Broodmatron must bless the partnering or re-partnering of new clan broodpairs.
  • The Broodmatron may rescind the banishment of any of her own offspring.
-The Rites of the Broodmatron, self-endowed
  • The Safeguard must appoint or re-appoint new clan duties.
  • The Safeguard may banish any dragon on grounds of ensuring clan health and safety.
-The Rites of the Safeguard, self-endowed
  • New laws will be granted following a majority vote by the Grit Council.

  • Addendums to laws are permitted at any time, but require a unanimous vote by the Grit Council.

Grit Council Laws

  • All pairings within the clan are permitted with no repercussions from one's primary mate.
-Clanlaw, granted to the Clanhelm by the Broodmatron

  • No hatchlings born within the clan are permitted to join the Exalted, only adults of their own volition.
-Broodlaw, granted to the Broodmatron by the Safeguard

  • All adults within the clan are required to learn to defend themselves and their battlebonds.
-Safelaw, granted to the Safeguard by the Clanhelm

  • The vote for the admittance of a newcomer is the only decision put to public vote. The Clanhelm may cast 5 votes and the Broodmatron, Safeguard, and other adults of the clan may cast 1 vote each, towards either allowing or barring the newcomer.
-Vetter Law, granted to the Clanhelm by the Safeguard
--Vetter Law Addendum i: In the event of a tied vote, The Clanhelm and the newcomer stand on either side of a nest of hatchlings, and the votes are tallied by the number of hatchlings that crawl towards each dragon.

  • Members of Grit Clan receive a Blood designation based upon their parentage within Grit Clan, increased by notable services performed for the clan and decreased by notable disservices.
-Blood Law, granted to the Clanhelm by the Broodmatron

  • After proof of mutual trust, on the first day of Rockbreaker's '14, Grit Clan under Clanhelm Lix of the High Prime Bloodline shall henceforth join in allegiance with The Traveling Snappers of the Slatehide Troupe of Dragonhome, Announcers of The Return, Children of the Allfather, led by Stonewing Who is Blessed of the Earth. The Slatehide Troupe grants Grit Clan passage on the Slatehide migratory route and quarter in stopping places along the route. Grit Clan grants the pacifist Slatehide Troupe physical protection and the benefits of Grit Clan membership, with exemption from Grit Clan laws.
-Slatehide Law, granted to the Slatehide Troupe by the Grit Council

  • To address concerns of leadership transparency, Grit Council meetings are henceforth to be held in view of the majority of the adult clan members. (For the purpose of the majority tally, only 15 of the Slatehide Troupe are to be considered members of Grit Clan at a time.) Grit Councillors are required to speak, Clan Elders are encouraged to speak, other adults are permitted to speak, but hatchlings are not permitted to speak.
-Public Council Law, granted to the Slatehide Troupe by the Grit Council
  • All current and future clanmates whose parents are unknown, untraceable, or disclosed as "none" are henceforth the offspring of the Broodmatron, regardless of age, breed, or element. As such they are exempt from banishment by the Clanhelm and the Safeguard. The Broodmatron's offspring may only leave Grit Clan of their own volition, or the unlikely case of banishment by the Broodmatron.
-Norphah's Law, granted to the Broodmatron by the Safeguard

  • To address allegations of unfair elemental bias, the Safeguard is permitted to form the Council of Emissaries. This second council contains the Safeguard and 9 Emissaries, 1 from each of the non-Earth Flights. The Safeguard may confer with the Council of Emissaries before casting a vote in Grit Council matters.
-Emissary Law, granted to the Safeguard by the Broodmatron

  • For the safety of the clan, anti-Arcane wards will be cast along the perimeter of the lair, preventing high concentrations of Arcane magic from crossing the border, for the vital protection from Arcane-infused shardstorms. The two Arcane members currently present, Emissary Aak and Prime Clan-daughter Prima's Charge, are permitted to remain in the clan.
-Arcane Law, granted to the Safeguard by the Clanhelm
--Arcane Law Addendum i: Following Emissary Aak's inability to cast sufficient perimeter wards, Tinkerer Tek, is permitted to live within Grit Clan in exchange for maintaining its perimeter wards.
--Arcane Law Addendum ii: Following the hatching of a Not'turn egg of apparently Arcane origin, it is conceded that hatchlings of Arcane alignment are required to remain within clan territory to avoid triggering the perimeter enchantments, and under Norphah's Law are members of the clan by technicality.

  • Out of concern for health, members of Grit Clan are not welcomed to consume insects, for they are pests.
-Insect Law, granted to the Clanhelm by the Safeguard
--Insect Law Addendum i: In times of famine, Insect Law is revoked and replaced with Famine Law.

  • Arcane Nocturne Lek is permitted to form the Umbral Court. This third council contains Arcane Nocturne Lek and 10 Emissaries, 1 from each of the non-Arcane Flights. They are permitted to conduct their meetings in the privacy that their breed finds most comfortable, on the condition they surrender their meeting notes to the Safeguard.
-Umbral Law, granted to the Umbral Court by the Broodmatron

  • If, and only if, Grit Clan is unable to maintain a surplus of meat, seafood, and edible flora, hunters shall prioritize local predator populations to encourage prey population growth, plant cultivation shall take priority over material scavenging, and bartering will be permitted with neighboring seafaring clans. The consumption of insects may be permitted.
-Famine Law, granted to the Safeguard by the Broodmatron
--Famine Law Addendum i: In time of Famine Law, hunting is banned. Wildclaws of Grit Clan are granted meat and quarter in an outpost of allied Clan Redemption.

  • By the quintuplets of Slatehide Known by Driftwing and Slatehide Known by Vermillionwing of Delm'Rokk, the Grit Clan under Clanhelm Lix of the High Prime Bloodline shall henceforth join in broodpair with The Traveling Snappers of the Slatehide Troupe of Dragonhome, Announcers of The Return, Children of the Allfather, spoken for by Stonewing Who is Blessed of the Earth.
-Slatebrood Law, granted to the Slatehide Troupe by the Grit Council
(record tablet scratched and defaced with "CRACK YOUR OUTSIDER LAWS")

"Due to Undue Pressure to Accept An Infiltrator, Truewing Snappers of Slate Hide Disavow Grit Clan and Excise Any Slatehide Troupe Members Unwilling to Disavow Them. The Truewing Snappers of Slate Hide Deny Grit Clan Passage on the Slate Hide Migratory Route and Quarter in Sacred Stopping Places along the Route. All Who Retain Alliance with Grit Clan Are Unholy to the Truewing Snappers of Slate Hide, Unknown in the Eyes of the Allfather."
    - The Slatehide Schism, chiseled over the Slatebrood Law tablet

  • As of the first morn of Rockbreaker's Ceremony, The Slatehide Troupe has divided into The Truewing Snappers of Slate Hide, and The Slatehide Troupe. The Slatehide Troupe continues to remain in alliance with Grit Clan, and the Truewing Snappers of Slate Hide have barred Grit Clan from entrance into their stopping places. Grit Clan shall relocate to the Region of Trotcliffe, a terrain of cohabitation with Beastclan and no laws.
    -Trotcliffe Law Custom

  • Members of all breeds, flights, and food preferences are welcome.
    Dissolution Law, unanimous

The Dissolution of Grit Clan

  • Render proper affection unto your mate.
  • Request assistance before in dire need of it.
  • I'm not the only one out to leave a legacy for myself. I'm just the best one. Still, I must leave room for others and listen to their ideas. Except for Reuk.
  • I cannot hide my true face from others forever. Wearing two helmets at once gets pretty stuffy, anyway.
-Clanlesson, granted to the Clanhelm by his years

  • Don't try to change yourself to suit your mate, you'll only end up close to how you started anyway.
  • Sometimes, offspring leave the nest, and it's for the best. They'll be strong enough. Be honest to them before they go, and be honest with yourself after they leave. If they're right... like Norphah... then listen to them, before it's too late.
-Broodlesson, granted to the Broodmatron by her years

  • You both go lawless if you want, but I'm not dissolving Safe Law ever, not even as a gesture. All adults better defend themselves and their battlebonds, no matter what hippie commune we're checking out. Especially on the way there, and double-especially when we get there.

And we're still Grit Clan no matter what, hear me? We're only visiting the region afraid to let dragons keep clan names, we might not stay. We haven't all seen the place yet. If we hate it, we take our name back, and we leave. Dia said there's a big oasis? Eugh. I hate deep water.

Are we seriously not leaving until I add something sappy to the tablet?
Fine, got one: Let your sentimental mentor waste time with some "seed-leaving ceremony" instead of foraging for more travel rations before we go, because that'll help us survive a trek across the Shattered cracking Plain.

    No.

Nothing! I've learned nothing! You both learned your big sappy lessons, but me, I've been right all along! I was right the Umbral Court was trying to starve us, I was right the Sons of Ulic were trying to snake us, and I was so right about the cracking Slatehides being only half-decent that we even watched them split their family in two! Name one thing that I've ever, EVER been wrong about!

Tuk? That doesn't count, he's still technically a hunter. Bargain-hunting counts.

See, there's your lesson. Now let's go.
-Safelesson, granted to the Safeguard by her years
