"The Darkness Hungers."

Darkness is my home, and my calling. I feel it, hear it reaching, calling out throughout the world, stretching its grasping tendrils throughout each corner, seeking to devour the light. I feel its hunger. I know that hunger well. I am Milu, goddess who stands guard over the spirit world. Aloha. Welcome.

There is no light in my cavern, not even the phosphorescent glow of cavern moss. But there is hunger. The dead hunger. The dead hunger for life, crying out endlessly for the lives they once led. They cry for loved ones lost, they cry for light and warmth. They cry in fear of the darkness. They cry in fear of me.

Detecting a new scent in my lair of darkness, I raise my great head, and my gnarled antlers knock against a stalactite on the cavern ceiling and knock it down. I roar in irritation and the dead cower and cry out from their prisons. A lizard flicks its tongue at them, demanding in his silence that they be quiet. I shake my shaggy mane and ignore them all. There is a fresh soul in my presence, fresh meat for my hunger.

He is a brave one. I can feel his fear, his uncertainty, but still he advances through the darkness of my cavern, coming steadily onward, looking for the light, looking for the path to freedom. But there can be no escape. In silence I abide, taking my time, sure of my prey. When he is close, I confront.

“Aloha,” I say. My great voice booms throughout the cavern, drowning out the cries and moans of the dead. “Welcome to death, deceased one.”

He fights. The brave ones always do. But there can be no escape from the talons of death. Victorious, I drag him into the underworld and cast him down among his fellows. His cries of anguish join theirs as he realizes his fate. I settle down to wait for my next meal. I never have long to wait. Mortals stand always at the threshold of death, and at any given time there is always one stepping across that line. Yet still I hunger, never satisfied.

If you should come to my domain, be prepared for a long visit. There is only one way in, and no way out. Yet why should you be afraid? One thing is certain, you will never lack for company, here in the land of the dead.
