I was a small child. My parents, completely loyal to the High Mind, looked down on me. How could I become strong enough to become a Ranger if I was the way I was? They favored my brother, who was born larger and stronger, who even got into training a year earlier than most hatchlings at the age of eight.

It was roughly about that time, when the scientists who worked closely with the High Mind sent out a letter to the many dragon breeds under the High Mind’s rule. That any hatchling could be donated to science and become infused with elemental magic. Since my brother was already in training, he wasn’t sent, but naturally, I was.

“How long do you think it will be until our turns?”

“Can you believe it? What an opportunity!”

“My sister wasn’t allowed to go, she was so disappointed!”

Many hatchlings chattered among themselves happily, and I was in agreement with them. I finally had an opportunity to make use of myself, to become better and serve the High Mind. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.

“Five-hundred-seventy-two through five-hundred-ninety-three!” A voice called over the speakers, and my eyes widened. That was me! I was Patient589! I stood happily, some hatchling around me saying words of praise and other words of jealousy. I waltzed to the big door, the only exit to the large room that held one hundred hatchlings’s cots.

One of the guards -a mechanical cyborg, with the body of a monkey-like creature yet the brain of a dragon- stopped me, and then I held up my wrist with my bar code on it. The guard scanned it, “Clear.” The door opened. I took a deep breath, then finally took a step through.
