Faust is not the kind of dragon you would expect to care for hatchlings; instead, his gruff attitude and pretty clothes give the venner of a well-esteemed gentleman from the elite clans of light. And yet, he lives here, living out his retired years under a pile of hatchlings. Driven here by hunger with a small group of dragons, he comfortably made himself welcome in the Tribe, or so he claims his backstory is. Whenever anyone asks about his backstory, and the meaning behind his name, he grows quiet, and distracts himself with a hatchling. Taking over as the last hatchery attendant, he quickly became overseer, a job he claimed he had practice in among his last clan. While Nature treats their hatchlings differently to Earth, it still feels like home to him.
He loves trinkets, and his nest is decorated with items that catch the light and dance it around.
It helps entertain the hatchlings.
While he has a nest at the bottom of the tree, he will often be found asleep in the cots surrounded by hatchlings, chasing away bad dreams and comforting crying babies.
He acts like his sole intention is the raising of the children, but as nearly all dragons in the Tribe, he also is running from a sinister backstory. The coatls know his name in the old tongue means Traitor, or deserter. They know he should have been hunted down, but the gossipers stay quiet. It is probably for his safety too, as many come to the Tribe to hide. And so, he buries himself into his work, keeping his head down – and thankfully, on its shoulders.

Shake. Shake. Shake.

A hair-thin crack spread across the surface of the egg. The baby thrashed harder, trying to deepen the crack, but he wasn't strong enough. He stopped to rest. The hatchery he was housed in was empty; he wasn't even meant to be born today. The clan's caretaker was out with the other hatchlings again. The nests would be filled with more eggs soon, no doubt.

After his breather, the baby threw himself against the inside wall of his egg. The shell didn't budge. He stopped again. Using his claws, he tried to wedge them into the crack, but they were too thick compared to the size of the breach in the egg's shell. He even tried to bite, to no avail. He returned to his original plan: thrash. Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake... crack. The egg's shell gave way a little more. He pushed through the shell with his snout, slowly. Wincing as the cold air touched his wet scales, he retreated into his egg. At least it was still warm in there. Making the hole in the shell bigger, he curled back up into the bottom of the egg. Exhausted, he fell asleep.

The caretaker strode briskly into the room, followed like a mother duck by 4 other hatchlings. He was surprised to find the area devoid of workers, but was even more so to see the fragments of the shell. Someone had hatched, early, but the hatchling was nowhere to be found. Did Sophie leave the door open? Panicked, he scrambled over to where the egg was. He sighed heavily in relief as he saw the little Fae hatchling sleeping inside. “How odd”, he murmured.
Faust chuckled and scooped the little fae up, cradling him against his downy chest.

Now was not the time to sleep, little one. There was a whole world waiting for you.

Sophie stayed behind to watch the other eggs as Faust went off in search of the other Hatchery attendant. Walking through the market, the fae stirred as the noise woke him up. Blinking, the fae gaped at the colours, blinding even for a newborn's milky eyes. Faust laughed, and moved the fae to the scruff of his neck. Instinctively, the little one grasped his neck and held on.

“Heyyyyyyyy, Papa~!” a voice cried out, singing over the clash of steel and cries of animals. Turning, Faust saw a pearlescent skydancer strut towards him. Faust saw fit to wait, the fae wobbling as he tried to balance. The skydancer stood quite glamorously, peering with obvious curiosity at the little blue fae on Faust's back.
“Greetings, Sylvari. Am I interrupting a customer by any chance?” A disgruntled pearlcatcher glared at Sylvari's back. Sylvari shrugged it off, slowly interpretating Faust's hand signs.
“They were finished, anyway. Why the little one? I thought you would have left it with that snapper, Peep? Peepa?”

“Sylvari. You’ve known her far longer than I have. Her name is Sophie."
Faust paused, spelling out Sophie's name individually, so that Sylvari would better understand. The effacious skydancer was quick at picking up languages, but Faust moved fluently. He felt the skydancer's light touch of his mind as he tried ti pick out the more difficult words.

"...And correct. She’s with the other hatchlings. This one though, a newborn, hatched a few minutes ago. I was just out for a walk with her.”
The skydancer grew giddy with excitement. Bounding over, he cried, “Hello little one! Welcome to the world! Wow! Look at your colours!” Turning, he asked, “Is she one of Kafani's?”
Faust chuckled at the fae's attempts to hide from Sylvari, but the laugh sounded off. “Yes, I believe so. Her brothers and sisters should be hatching soon too. Sophie's checking up with them, making sure they're ready. Do you know where the parents would be?”
Sylvari paused, then realistion flooded his face.
"Oh~! That’s right, you’re still so new! Aah, you don’t need to show Kafani and Voltair their kids, or their grandkids really, they often come down and check up on them anyway. But good initiative! Shows you’re keen! Speaking of Keen, when are you getting yourself a lady? Gotta have more of your…. Type… hanging around, don’t we?” Sylvari winked and nudged Faust, only slightly hiding the thinly veiled insult. The kid was far too nosy, and Faust knew his type was still treated with disregard and outright discrimination. He had seen the way the other skydancers acted, their noses high above the air surrounding the common filth. But the words were water off a duck’s back, and he didn’t spare the effort to be offended by them. The best he could do was make sure the hatchlings learnt better.
Watching Sylvari flounce back to his station, where the queue for his services was lengthening quickly, Faust continued onward. The river was near here, he remembered, and judging by the time, it was bath-time for the hatchlings. Today would be a big day for the little fae.
