Artificially created far below the surface — from ice that's had constant, prolonged exposure to old, dark magic — these Wraiths are agile and deceptive. They attack by unleashing a large burst of Ice magic in all directions that instantaneously manifests as millions of thin, needle-like spikes. Surviving an encounter is rare. Surviving more than that is unheard of. They prefer the ever-white fields, yet there have been scattered rumors of them being sighted in other Flights. Their favored method of leading others astray is in the form of long, high-pitched wails that're sure to make one's skin crawl and fur stand on end. The last thing a traveler should do, regardless of experience, is try to find the sound's source, for the cold that pulls them under burns. This wraith had only barely been born, had just burrowed up from the deep ice to blink at the endless snow and gleaming sky, when the wind came down and plucked them up. Sudden, violent storms are not rare on the Southern Icefield, but this one that could carry a tiny, fragile body across the straits and deliver it unharmed on the main continent was not usual at all. Was it magically caused? A miracle of meteorology? Whatever the providence, the young wraith did not know or care. They were small, frightened, and confused in a strange land. They could sense no adult wraiths to seek out and learn from. They could find no ice to burrow back into, and they only magic they sensed was foreign and warm. Bereft of options, they fled into the woods. They were lucky. Despite unknowingly traveling north, away from the Icefields, they found cool gullys and damp caves to rest in. They encountered only animals and never grew too big to hide. Isolated from their own kind, not even knowing what they were, they somehow found a name. Eventually, Nolichucky found a home. It's a small hollow in the mountains in Shadow territory, with a creek, barely a trickle, fed by a spring in high rocks. The valleyside is dotted with small caves to hide and rest in, while broad-leaved trees break the sun's rays, letting only indirect light dapple the valley floor. The effects of Nolichucky's presense are small but unmistakeable- miniature icebergs choking the stream, frost on the grass in the morning, and the complete absense of amphibians and bugs, though they prey on the fish darting through the water and small mammals creeping below the trees. When they are lonely, they sing- weird yowls and piercing wails that hearken back to some half-remembered instinct. On a few occasions in the past, dragons followed the noise back to the hollow. None survived. Nolichucky wailed and mourned, covered them in stones and and hoped no more would ever come. |
