I named him the anglicised version of the serpent that gnaws at the roots of the World Tree (Yggdrasil) in Norse mythology. Also when I dressed him for some reason Master Of Puppets by Metallica was playing in my brain so I guess that’s his theme now.
So Ye, Contagion can’t let Yggdrasil have nice things without throwing toys (even though Dweller wasn’t intended to be Ygg’s acolyte at all, he just kinda...exists in the woods).
'Look upon my creation, dear Vitality, and marvel! I am now your equal again, for I have summoned an acolyte of my very own!'
Your hubris will be your undoing, Pestilence. This vessel is an unholy culmination of foul magic and dubious intent, born out of a jealousy that is unfounded. Though you have named it in spite of me, I forgive you. Our Mothers do not want to wage war again.
But, know this. I fear you do not have as much control over it as you think. Its eyes sparkle with malicious opportunity, and the smile it wears is fraudulent- a rictus grin no dragon can wear with authenticity. I believe that it will attempt to disrupt the balance should you channel more of its power. Though you have done well to hide it from the mortals, concealing it deep within the Labyrinth, I can only hope that my warnings will dissuade you from tinkering with it any further. This lair has schisms aplenty- they do not need a war between forces they do not wholly comprehend. The Tree-Beast and I are NOT your enemies.

In Norse mythology, Níðhöggr (Malice Striker, traditionally also spelled Níðhǫggr, often anglicized Nidhogg) is a dragon/serpent who gnaws at a root of the world tree, Yggdrasil. In historical Viking society, níð was a term for a social stigma implying the loss of honor and the status of a villain. Thus, its name might refer to its role as a horrific monster in its action of chewing the corpses of the inhabitants of Náströnd: those guilty of murder, adultery, and oath-breaking, which Norse society considered among the worst possible. In the standardized Old Norse orthography, the name is spelled Níðhǫggr, but the letter ǫ is frequently replaced with the Modern Icelandic ö for reasons of familiarity or technical expediency. The name can be represented in English texts with i for í; th, d or (rarely) dh for ð; o for ǫ and optionally without r as in Modern Scandinavian reflexes. The Modern Icelandic form Níðhöggur is also sometimes seen, with special characters or similarly anglicized. The Danish forms Nidhug and Nidhøg can also be encountered; or Norwegian Nidhogg and Swedish Nidhögg. Although not in the game, Nidhogg is shown as a comparison for Alduin, the main antagonist of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in the sense both feed on the dead and are the symbols of destruction. In Alduin's case he feeds on the souls of the dead in Sovngarde, the afterlife of the natives of Skyrim and is prophecised to bring the end of the world, gaining the title World-Eater which could be a reference to Nidhogg's gnawing at the roots of Yggdrasil. |
