LORE

Short Bio:

Being both an Arcane dragon and having star-like designs on his feathers, Pumpkin was destined to be fascinated by space. Specifically interested in the stars, he wondered what mysteries hid within them. He researched as much as he could on them, but never could find an answer on his biggest question: what magical powers do they hold? So he set it upon himself to to be the first to discover the star’s powers. In his time studying magic he has made many breakthroughs with new spells, but still nothing on celestial magic.

One night while pondering if he would ever discover it, he helps a female Coatl named Cantaloupe. He learns she has a curse no one has been able to break, and he vowed to help remove it. Cantaloupe felt bad to burden him with this, so she offered to assist him as she could. They have yet to remove her curse, but they instead found love

Short Story:

Ever since Pumpkin was a hatchling, he was amazed by the tiny bright lights that would appear in the night sky that were just like the marks on his body and wings. He felt he had a connection with them, a magical one.

When he looked up information on these things he learned were called “stars”, he was a mite displeased. So much scientific research, but none on their magical properties. Upon learning this, Pumpkin set it on himself to become the first to tap into the magic of the stars.

He started his magic studies early, becoming a prodigy among other magic dragons his age. He had a natural knack for it. Though he was also motivated by his goal. He continued to improve each day, and each day kept working more on studying the stars.

One night while he was out stargazing, he began to question if he’d ever find celestial magic (what he dubbed his research). Was there no magic outside their planet?

A scream suddenly broke through his thoughts. And then a cry for help. Pumpkin quickly gets up and follows the shouts. He finds a female Coatl being attacked by Beastclan members. Pumpkin fights them off with his magic and aids the Coatl.

“Thank you...” she softly says.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

“Just some minor injuries...”

“I know healing magic. Let me take you back to my place, it’ll be safe there. Follow me.”

He starts to fly away but the girl doesn’t follow.

“Are your wings hurt?”

She sets her gaze downward, then steps into the moonlight. Her wings were covered in strange parchments.

“I was cursed as a hatchling... I don’t remember it well. All I know is I wandered off from my clan and a strange dragon captured me. Next thing I knew I was back where I was, but unable to fly thanks to these...”

Pumpkin flies back down and investigated the talismans on her wings.

“The best magicians and scientists around the world tried to remove these from me, but to no success...”

Pumpkin’s eyes then lit up. Unknown magic? It could only be magic not from this world!

Growls started to be heard from the darkness. The beasts must have gotten reinforcements, Pumpkin thought. No time to lose, Pumpkin quickly mutters a spell. A set of ethereal wings appear and he sets them on the girl.

“These are temporary wings I developed for teaching hatchings to fly. They’ll automatically follow me, so don’t worry about trying to control them. Ready?”

She nervously nods.

Pumpkin takes off. Shortly after, the wings on the girl begin to flap. The girl panics as she’s lifted off the ground. She curls up and closes her eyes.

Pumpkin turns his head to check on her and sees her like this. After flying for a bit, he speaks.

“Isn’t it beautiful?”

The female Coatl slowly opens her eyes. She looks around at the amazing scenery of the Starfall Isles shining in the moonlight.

“It is...”

They eventually land in Pumpkin’s lair, a small den in the Crystalpine Reaches. The place has notes and leftover food on the floor and furniture.

“Uh... sorry for the mess...” he says as he tries to clean up some of the mess.

She chuckles. “It’s fine.” She looks around the lair. “You do lots of research huh?”

He blushes. “Yeah... I’m studying something in particular...”

The female Coatl inquisitively turns her head. “What is it?”

His eyes light up. “Celestial magic!”

“Celestial magic?”

“Yes, magic from the stars. And you might be the key!”

“Me?”

“Those strange parchments on your wings, no one on this world could remove them yes? Then it must be magic not from this world!”

Her eyes light up as well. “You might be right!”

She goes to move but collapses. Pumpkin rushes to her side.

“Drat, I forgot you were injured! I’m so sorry, I’ll heal you now!”

As she’s being healed, she turns her head to him.

“What’s your name?” she asks

He turns his head to look at her. He smiles. “Pumpkin”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Cantaloupe.”

Pumpkin finishes his healing and Cantaloupe gets up.

“If you don’t mind... may I stay here for the night?”

“Not at all! Make yourself at home!”

“Thank you...”

Cantaloupe looks around to find an area to sleep. Pumpkin realizes and quickly cleans up a spot for her to sleep in. She thanks him and lays down to sleep. Pumpkin goes to his usual sleeping spot and goes to bed for the night as well.

The next morning, Pumpkin wakes up and notices Cantaloupe already awake looking outside the den.

“Sleep well?” He asks.

She jumps at the sudden break of silence.

“Oh! I didn’t mean to startle you!”

“It’s okay.” she says as she turns around. “I slept well, thank you.”

She then pulls out from her basket some fresh fish.

“How did you-“

“I found the spell you used on me last night in your notes.”

Pumpkin looks around at the mess of papers. “I’m surprised you found them.” He laughs.

Cantaloupe laughs as well. She then offers him a fish. “Hungry?”

He nods and takes the offer. “You didn’t have to, you know.”

“Think of this as repayment for you saving me last night.”

He chuckles “Well payment accepted.”

They eat their food in silence while they stared outside the lair. Once they finish, Cantaloupe nervously looks down. Pumpkin notices.

“Something wrong?”

“I... um...”

She turns to him.

“Can... I stay here?”

Pumpkin’s eyes widen in surprise.

“Ever since I was a hatchling I was cursed to never fly on my own again... but... you changed that. And I think you’re the only one who can undo this curse. I can help around getting food like I did today and such! I’m very good at foraging and hunting since I’ve been grounded all my life and-“

“Yes.”

“I can- huh?”

“You can stay. I was hoping you would, I wanted to help you with your curse.”

She tears up. “Oh... thank you!”

She flops to the ground in tears. Pumpkin at first is surprised by the sudden outburst of emotion, but then approaches her and embraces her.

“We’ll figure this out. Together.”

Ever since then, Pumpkin and Cantaloupe worked together to lift her curse. They have yet to remove it, but they managed to create permanent replacement wings for her. And in their studies, they learned of their love for each other.

Eventually they realized their lair was too small for working on their research. Plus they wanted to start a family. They looked into lairs accepting dragons, and came to join the (To Be Named) Clan.
