Every year, hundreds of these bony birds lead groups of revelers through the murky wasteland, their lanterns adding as much as aiding in the thick, putrid fog. (Riot of Rot 2019 Holiday Item)

- - - ▢ Trial of Contagion: Yersinia strolled to the top of the craig she'd claimed as her own. Her steps were sure, and her gaze never faltering from the glow of the Wyrmwound, dimly illuminating the wastelands below her. She'd hoped at least that her demeanor didn't betray the way she really felt, the roiling in her gut. This is it. she'd thought. The first of the Trials; the Trial of contagion. She'd chosen her spot carefully, in close proximity to the Wyrmwound she'd be bound to gain a blessing from Mother, but hopefully far enough away that she would be able to combat- and control it with ease. Gingerly, she dug into her satchel and pulled out a crude sculpture of Plaguemother carved from a single piece of bone. She placed it before her, overlooking the outcrop which she would sit for the next month. She sat down before it and curled her tail over her front legs. And so it begins

The coming days were uneventful, with Yersinia meditating along the edge of the crag. Dipping only slightly into the rations she had packed with her. I'll need to save my food, my strength for the second Trial. If there were any other initiates within her vicinity attempting the Trials, she did not see them. She awoke one murky morning and saw him. A mirror, adorned with bones coming up to her in greeting. The red scarring along his body gave her pause, a Necromancer, it was unmistakable. "Long life to you" She dipped her head in greeting. The Necromancer nodded in response. "Initiate Yersinia" he paused "It is now Dawn of the Seventh Day, I am sent here to assess your progress in the Trials."
"No visible signs of Contagion to date" She muttered, sitting up straighter. "But the Trial is yet to be finished."
***
She'd almost lost count now, the number of days that had passed. And still she'd felt no signs of infection. It can't be the end of the first Trial, could it? No they would've come. she would have been shunned, disgraced. Or would they have just left her there? On the crag to give up? Gah! Stop thinking like this, you can't doubt yourself now! But as the second Trial grew nearer so too did her unease. She started to hear them more now, scurrying below and around her. Dragons. She fought the urge to look over and see them Focus! Clear your mind and focus! No doubt things were getting interesting, and clans have started to group to view the progress of budding initiates.
***
The dawn that crested over the Wastes felt chilly this time around. A thick fog now obscuring most of Yersinia's vision, the land glowing a sickly yellow from the light of the sun. Yersinia's breathing came in shallow panting now, beads of sweat starting to form along her scales. Despite this, and the pounding headache creeping along her skull she'd felt almost giddy. She sat up straight, attempting to look deep in meditation as the mirror strolled near her again. "Initiate Yersinia. On the dawn of the Twelfth day you have succeeded the Trial of Infection." She dipped her head acknowledgement as he turned to leave again. Adjusting her stance, she turned again to face the wyrmwound and continued to meditate. A slow smile creeping along her lips.

- - - - ▢ Trial of Survival It grew easier to lose herself in Meditation, gaining an awareness of herself as her body continued to deteriorate. Her breathing became short and shallow, her breaths often ending in a hacking cough. Her eyes would grow heavy with her barely having the strength to reopen them. Her scales, once a pale ivory, turned a brilliant scarlet as beads of sweat permeated her body. This isn't so bad. She thought choking back a cough I can do this.
***
Growing up in the wastelands disease was not unfamiliar to her. She took pride in her strengths. In trusting herself that her body could overcome the harshest conditions Sornieth could throw at her. Such are the children of the Plaguemother. As it stood it was a no brainer that she would attempt the Trials and become a Necromancer. She would make her family proud, one way or another.
But this was different to anything she'd endured before.
She'd lost track of time now. Her limbs now started trembling. Her eyes started to burn. Is... Am I crying? Opening her eyes to small slits, Yersinia fought back a cry as the hazy light blinded her, peering to her claws she stifled a gasp. Her scales weren't diminishing in color. They were getting bright now, her claws now darkening to black, with scales closest to them starting to discolor.
She didn't hear him behind her but she could feel his presence all the same. "Initiate Yersinia." The mirror from before spoke. Her shoulders trembling, her limbs creaking as she fought to sit up straighter and in a swift movement she hoped looked natural she inclined her head in greeting, not daring to turn her head to see him.
His voice, she could swear his voice was almost amused. "Even now, you try and maintain appearances?"
"Displaying weakness serves no one." Yersinia cringed inwardly at the racking breathless whisper that her voice had become.
"But one should acknowledge it all the same. You can believe you are fine, but we both know you are dying."
***
For a time after, she still felt a chill at his words. "you are dying." The thought stained her mind, clinging to her like the beads of sweat clinging to her too hot scales. you're dying you're dying you're dying."
She shook her head "He's lying. I'm fine." she could feel her shoulders dripping lower, her head no longer held high. "I just need to clear my mind." She muttered to herself, opening her eyes a touch to see her statue of Plaguemother. But the statue itself was gone.
***
Her mind was a fevered haze now. Time held no meaning. Day and night meant nothing to her. She could hear her family through the thick fog of her mind. Snickering. Sneering. Did you really think you could do it? Weak. You can't sustain Her gifts, you are unworthy of them. Even Her statue has abandoned you. The other initiates, wherever they were were laughing at her too. The necromancer paced behind her, his claws scraping into the rocks jarring her thoughts further. "You've given up already?" I have not. "Is your confidence so fickle?"
