" There's a reckoning a'comin / And it burns beyond the grave " — Blood On My Name
On a pristine autumn morning, the discovery of the egg occurred. Its radiant glow could be observed from the fringes of a rural community of beasts, its gleaming gold hues rivalling the delicate pink of daybreak. Like a guiding beacon, the creature clan was drawn to the fields, consumed by curiosity and, for some, trepidation. Those attuned to the whims of destiny could feel a shift in the atmosphere, an imposing energy emanating from the luminescence in the fields. They murmured with uncertainty, yet persisted in tandem with their brethren, for none could resist the enchanting summons of the light. The first to reach the origin of the light was a youthful Longneck. Resembling a majestic stage curtain, she delicately pushed apart the corn stalks, unveiling the source of the luminous glow. In that moment, she erupted into an exclamation of astonishment. Among the rows of corn lay an egg of extraordinary beauty. The shell shimmered and sparkled with an iridescent radiance, unlike any egg that came before it. Despite being nestled in soil, not a single speck of dirt tarnished its sleek, flawless surface. It was heavenly in its beauty. The Longneck gracefully extended her arms down to cradle the egg, averting her gaze to shield her eyes from its brilliance. Her clanmates formed a tight circle around her, jostling and bickering as they vied for a closer look. Enthralled by its magnificence, each one pleaded for the opportunity to hold the egg and bask in its radiance. The Longneck held her prize tightly to her chest, her fierce grip causing some to fear she might crush its delicate shell. Her mouth twisted into a sharp-toothed snarl. "Mine!" She hissed. The crowd flinched back collectively as if struck by a hot iron rod. Then, their faces darkened and twisted into snarls of their own, each possessed by a fit of frightening jealousy. The desire to possess the egg consumed them like a white-hot flame, urging them to surge forward as one and descend upon their clanmate with snapping teeth and swift hooves. The sun had just rolled over the horizon when the clan stepped away from the limp body of their former sister. From the whirlwind of broken corn stalks and pools of scarlet, they passed around the egg, each member kissing the shell and washing it with tears of worship. On that day, Vanir was hatched. |
