It was like a thousand tiny voices, just at the edge of hearing. Not speaking words, exactly, but concepts. Consume, multiply, grow. Live.

He wouldn't have been able to hear them at all if they had been outside his own body.

He shifted slightly in his bed, being careful to keep his neck well supported at all times. His modified gullet was too heavy with fluid for him to easily raise his neck, especially this late in the cycle, when he had already channeled so much of his energy into the new experimental strain. It wouldn't be long until it was ready.

He liked this best of all his duties, to be truthful. He was proud of all his work, of course, especially when his master chose to draw power from him, but this was what he had been made for.

He let his eyes drift closed, the whispering of his children lulling him back to sleep.
