GRAVEL
"Two thingsss: Who do you want dead? How dead do you want them?"

QwBX3br.png
“Stealing eggs is pretty common for Beast Clans. I mean, we haven’t and we wouldn’t, but that don't change the fact Talona actively encourages it. Everyone has their own methods, though, because her instructions don’t really specify past ‘raid a nest and take the children.' The fate of an egg is a toss-up based on who swiped it in the first place.

“For instance, I know most Harpy clans will smash 'em. If it never hatches, then you don’t have another dragon to have to deal with later. Centaurs typically take this approach, too, although I’ve heard they’ll go so far as to try and eat them like bird eggs which, honestly, sounds more like a Serthis thing. The Longneck will usually abandon the egg someplace far away since they don’t have the heart to kill an infant, even if that infant will grow up to eat them later, and I’ve heard a lot of stories about the Talonok selling the eggs to individuals of ill-repute. Slavers, mostly. Gold's more useful than a giant mouth to feed, I guess.

“The Serthis are… well, I’ve heard a lot of stories that the Serthis are trying to tame dragons. They’re not out here destroying or eating the eggs. They're actually incubating them and then trying to raise hatchlings as weapons. Think Warcats, if you need a comparison. I mean, they’ll kill whatever comes out if they think it’s not going to be useful or trainable, but I’ve heard whispers of them succeeding. They raise the dragons like a Serthis, treat them like an animal, and come up with some kind of domesticated feral child that they use until it gets itself killed.

“As for the Maren? Hell if I know. I’ve never met one, and that sounds like a Water Flight problem.”

-- Landis of Ta’Angrel, as recorded by Mojave of The Lorekeepers

"Gravel. It’s a dumb name, but he’s not a dumb dragon. He’s just different. Thinks weird. Doesn’t really understand how to be a dragon, seems to think more like a beast. Makes sense.

“Not, like, the Serthis liked him or anything, though. He was useful. Didn’t matter that he was small. Small can do damage enough. He was one of the ones who attacked Earthquake, actually, but Arsenic crushed him. They left him. Now we have him. And I know Snap doesn’t like it, but Earthquake doesn’t mind, and Snap doesn’t like anything. So, we ignore her. He stays.”

HISTORY
Gravel was raised by Serthis, not that he was ever considered an equal. Rather, he was a prisoner of war, abducted as an egg and raised to be their mindless muscle. His keepers made him sleep in a crate, conditioned him to violence, and turned him on their enemies as a show of their dominance over dragonkind. In fact, Gravel was the secret weapon unleashed on Clan Elsewhere during the attack that crippled Earthquake, and was chalked up as a casualty when they were forced to flee, leaving their gravely wounded “pet” behind.

While Snap wanted him finished off in retribution, Earthquake called for him to be spared. In his mind, the biggest victim was the Mirror bleeding at their feet, an act of mercy that led to Gravel becoming an honorary member of Clan Elsewhere. He didn’t acclimate well and, even now, seems to not favor the company of dragons. With the move to Irthskaar, he spends most of his time in Omen with the Serthis who reside there, and while he has some acquaintances he hunts with on occasion, the closest thing he has to a draconic friend is the equally offbeat Ikrakav.

Gravel wears many hats within The Abandoned; during times of conflict, he sees use as a frontline fighter, and when everything is peaceful, he does whatever needs done. Scavenging and hunting are particular talents of his, though he also sees use as a day laborer, a miner, and a caravan guard if there is a great enough need. He's also a handy Serthis-to-dragon translator when left conversing with Serthis who don't know the common tongue, though it's hard to trust Gravel to be a hundred percent honest with the translations (he gets a big catty when he's irritated).

SSATHANIIKA
Nobody but Gravel can really pronounce Ssathaniika’s name with all the weird, Serthis accents that their tongues can’t form, so most refer to her as “Nika.” She seems to be a comfort to Gravel--something of a therapy basilisk--who reminds him just enough of his childhood among snakes without the added hostility. She’s strangely affectionate for a basilisk and follows Gravel wherever he goes, even out into the hunting grounds where Gravel catches food for Clan Elsewhere.

With the two basically being inseparable, it can make interacting with Gravel more difficult than usual. After all, while Nika is well-mannered for a basilisk, she's still] a basilisk, and basilisks have a nasty habit of leaving things stone-still and unalive. There's even rumors among newcomers in Irthskaar that Nika is responsible for the petrified body of Hashakgik outside of the canyon. It's false, of course, but is something Gravel runs with. He likes the idea of his little Nika being a hero.
