xxxxxxxxxxxx She hadn't seen home in a while. Hadn't seen even a hint of snow or ice or anything that reminded her remotely of what she'd left. Just more darkness and glowshrooms and creeping vines.

She wasn't sure if she missed it.

Sometimes, she stood still and listened, as though if she'd just concentrate, she could hear the shrieking of winds over tundras or the crunch of shifting ice. But all she was ever met with were curious glances and the ever present stillness and shadows.

"If you have to think," said Tanithe one day, "then you don't miss it."

He made it sound simple. But for him, everything was simple, wasn't it? A matter of yes or no, want or don't want. No right or wrongs, should or could'ves. Simple. Easy.

And so very mistaken.

"Of course," she told him, appeasing even in the face of his disinterest. Yet every day, Zhora still found herself standing in front of her den, holding her breath and waiting for something that would never appear.

... What was this feeling?

Zhora is constantly longing for something she doesn't have. It's not that she doesn't miss her home—she does—she just doesn't miss it enough that she'd want to take the journey back. Instead, she's stuck in a cycle where she's waiting for something to happen, but doesn't know what. She feels like if she just keeps waiting, keeps listening, something will occur that'll tell her what to do. Either to go back home and see her family, or to stay here in Shadow. It leaves her feeling lost and confused, but she's able to push aside the emotions during everyday life. It's only in the morning, when she opens her eyes and expects to be met with ice and is instead met with shadows, that this feeling strikes her. And so, she gets up, and waits and listens.

She's very meticulous in her everyday life. Keeps everything organized and neat. She's basically the roommate you hate 'cause she always gets on your case about leaving a cup on your desk or for not doing the dishes. And no matter how many times you're like, "I'm using it! I'll put it back later, okay?" she knows that that's a lie and that no, you'll never end up putting that sharpie back into the drawer, so she'll just watch you creepily as you finish drawing before you finally sigh, hand it off to her, and she brandishes it triumphantly and shoves it back in a drawer. And she thinks she's the normal one. But she's great to have around, 'cause when you come stumbling back home, smelling of alcohol, she won't question a thing. She'll just roll her eyes, tell you not to leave a mess, and appear in the morning with a bottle of water and Aspirin. And she might come with you to an AA meeting, 'cause if a dragon's coming home drunk, that's an issue.

Zhora hailed from the Southern Icefield. She never really expected to settle in Shadow, thought she'd just stop here before moving on to Light, but she stayed, mostly to keep Tanithe out of trouble. She bailed him out of dragon jail after he cheated on his third wife ("Mate," he corrected her as she led him back to his den, his arm across her shoulders. "We're dragons, we have mates, not wives." Zhora kept quiet, and only glanced in askance at Reginald and Celozon, the only husband and wife pair in this place apparently.), and it turns out she was the only one who could even stand being around him. ("He's weird," Aisha said one day as they journeyed back from the Crystal Pools. Tanithe had been left at the river, told to wash the blood off his claws or he wasn't allowed back. He had shrugged, assented, and that had been that. "He doesn't seem to care about anything but himself. The other day, sweet little Ayla tripped and scrapped her knees, and instead of helping, Tanithe just stared. It was just... creepy. Really creepy." Aisha shivered. "We stay away from him.")

After that, Zhora stayed, because what else could she do? Without her, Tanithe would get into who knows how much trouble, and as the days passed and her bags stayed packed by her door, she stopped thinking, "I'm going to leave soon." and started thinking, "Maybe I should unpack soon." But she hasn't yet. She's still waiting, for some sign or vision telling her that she should stay or move on. Until then, she spends her time watching over Tanithe and being the only dragon he hadn't tried to woo. (She still wasn't sure if she should be insulted by that or not, but the others assured her that it was a good thing. As for Tanithe? Well, he never said anything one way or the other.)

Zhora is the only dragon able to put up with Tanithe for long periods of time. She understands why the others don't like him, but she doesn't really care. They've clear boundaries with each other, and Tanithe never crosses them. And yeah, Tanithe pretty much broke every dragon's heart in the clan at least once, but he never did that to her. So who cares, right? He's just a bit too obsessive with the coliseum, a bit too cold, but that's fine. Everyone has their failings.
