Biography
BADIA - Knitter
While not a precise description of Badia's work, the phrase “a stitch in time saves nine” often gets bandied about in her presence. For every careful twist of yarn over her needles, another nine careless stitches can be saved, or nine minutes of her time unsnarling a mistake, or nine feet of precious material. It doesn’t matter what the nine things being saved are. It simply matters that caution and patience are worth more in the long run than rushing a project out the door.
Badia supposes she gets this frame of mind from her family. The child of a poet and an archivist who always choose every word with care, she’s grown up surrounded by deliberate creation. Why should her knitting be any different?
Of course, she finds that now and again, she wishes it were easier for her to free her work from the needles and send it away, never to be seen again. Even when following patterns she knows like the back of her hand, Badia continues to discover strange shapes in her work, almost unnoticeable but for the fact that she knows they do not belong. If they are simply mistakes, it is a blemish on her reputation. If they are something else, though...well, she dreads to think of how to explain messages from a higher power weaving their way into her yarn, because then what follows? Fame? Fortune? A more fickle sort of fate?
It’s best not to tempt these things. She keeps her head down, and her needles moving. Perhaps if she ignores the patterns in her work, eventually, they will leave her alone at last.
