One of the countless mercenaries roaming the wastelands, finding temporary pleasure in the conflicts taking place. Bloodshed and horror to give peace to meaningless lives. Her price wasn't cheap, and she demanded charge of their forces, but she found work. A little too much of it, perhaps.
She wasn't getting paid to question her actions. Boundaries, resources, rightful heirs—what do these matter in the end, when the outcome has already changed within a year's time? Did that window of success mean more than the lives lost? But it wasn't like she understood the value of life. When had she ever desired a lover or children? Those things were beyond her. She existed as a tool of those who hired her time, and nothing more or less.
Even when that nosy scholar approached her for insights on the land and its politics, none of it mattered. She described the bloodshed with as much emotion as she could muster; that is to say, none at all. Yes, that clan is extinct because they underestimated the spring lightning strikes. Their culture? They did not pay well. Was there culture beyond that?
When she wasn't fighting or travelling, she lay curled in the weathered soil and watched the sky. Sometimes she slept, but mostly she kept one eye open to count grains of sand. By then, she'd slept without dreams for years.
Maybe that is what led to such an easy fall. When a strange bundle of rags approached her, and dread shot through her veins... How long had it been since she'd felt anything at all? And in exchange, anything at all...
