Biography
She was mere hours old when she contracted the infection; the fever robbed her of any recollection of the events leading up to it. She believed what she was told - she had no reason not to; after all, hadn't Carbonpaper taken care of her, in those dark days, at great peril to herself? She was an orphan, found wandering in the wastes - hideously diseased, oh, hadn't they all worried that she wouldn't make it? It was a good thing that Carbonpaper had taken her in, cared for her. Trained her as a servant as she grew. Few others would give one so hideously deformed as herself a chance. Even now, weeping sores still gape under her bandages; her scales have never fully grown back, and what remains is brittle; the gembond spreads daily. And she has no tongue.
A present? For me? Copy stared down at the small wrapped box and tilted her head. Who could have left such a thing? The other imperials avoided her absolutely - and not without cause; even she was aware of what she could become at any time - and her master had rarely given her anything (except her own life, the greatest gift of all, or so she thought). Suspecting some cruel joke, she pulled the paper apart and cautiously sniffed the box. It smelled fine, but just in case, she tucked it away for a few days, until curiosity got the better of her and she returned to open it. Inside she found a set of copper rings. Jewelry? For her? The absurdity of it made her bark aloud, her laugh that wasn't quite a laugh. Even still, she pulled them on over her bandages, admiring the way they shone in the light. Cheap trinkets, yes, but the meaning behind them was far more important. But who could possibly have given them to her?
She agonized about it for a long time. Only one dragon in the lair could truly be described as "nice" to her; the others, barely tolerant. Even Carbonpaper who had saved her life showed her little kindness. But his actions, she thought, were more from pity than from affection. Even if they weren't, how could she ever become close to another dragon? What if her disease spread? To her lover? To her offspring?
But her blood these days ran thick and hot, and finally, she decided. To fear the future was foolish, when all she had to hope for was the future; and, after all, Carbonpaper for all her close contact never contracted her diseases. She would go to him, honestly express her feelings. At the least she hoped he would still be nice to her.
It hadn't been a secret, not really. They'd agreed that Electricoutlet would tend the eggs - the dragons who guarded the nests would not suffer her to go near them, anyway - and she would continue in Carbonpaper's service. But the eggs hatched and Carbonpaper cast her out.
If other dragons were only cordial to her because they feared Carbonpaper, they no longer had anything to fear. Soon she and her family had transplanted to a distant corner of the lair. Even so, she was happier now than she ever was.
