He had admired her for quite some time, the quiet spiral born in the Waste. He knew her grandfather-- from a distance, as any who did not pledge themselves to him were wise to do-- but he did not know her. Not truly, at least. She did not speak, and he did not know sign.

So he learned.

It was... fumbling, at best. He was slow to learn, and had difficulty keeping the rest of his body still. It was his nature to coil and wiggle, so expressive, so energetic as most spirals are. The fae he learned from did not flap his crests as he signed, so surely Moeder should not writhe and wriggle and twist as spirals were so naturally inclined?

His first attempt to talk to her was awkward, a lesson in how to stammer without ever speaking a word. His fingers shook, his hands tangling and misplacing themselves as he attempted to sign the greeting he had practiced for the better part of a week; in his own cave his signage had been spotless-- why now was it impossible to impart one simple phrase!?

Her claws-- shiny, metallic, a product of the infection she had willingly endured from Phyrexia in order to best determine how to control it-- covered his, her lips pulled into a slight smile. When his hands stilled, she withdrew, signing carefully.

You can speak, you know. I can hear quite well.

Her entire body moved as she signed, wings flipping out and back in and coils constantly rolling over themselves, and how embarrassed he was to realize how stiff, how stunted his attempt at signing to her must have seemed.

Slowly, carefully, focusing more on the shapes of his claws than on forcing his body to lay still, he signed back: I want to get better at this. For you.

Her smile grew warmer as she shook her head, and he decided he would do anything if it would make her smile like that again.
