Biography

ᛗᚨᚾᛁ
The Year-Counter

Mani is one of several custodians of the Spire. He works in counterpoint to Sol: where she ensures that the Spire is filled with golden light throughout the day and evening, it is his job to extinguish the many candles and lamps in public areas after everyone has gone to bed and replace them with a smaller number of dim, blue nightlights. It is a curiously limited role, and yet it gives him the excuse to wander the halls of the Spire in the wee hours, using his natural Shadow-sight to navigate in the deepest dark without need of a lantern to guide him. Woe betide the hatchling that tries to sneak out of bed unnoticed, for Mani is not above spooking them to teach them a lesson!

During the day, or at least in the afternoons when he is awake, Mani can most often be found assisting Sol in her candle making. While she remains at heart dedicated to the simple, undyed beeswax candle, he enjoys experimenting with colourful dips, complicated moulds and soothing scents, particularly when they are producing candles to sell outside the clan. He also takes charge of crafting the beeswax and seed oils for use in lanterns.

However, his true speciality lies in more unusual goods. He distills the sap from Starwood Birches into the iconic oil that burns a brilliant and eerie shade of blue. As well as being an artisan product, in high demand from visitors to the Starfall Isles and sold at a premium by Citta, the oil also goes to the clan’s nocturnal residents who prefer a gentler starlight glow to the harsh gold of a more natural flame. Mani also makes a small but regular supply of enchanted black candles: these are exclusively reserved for his personal use, and he will not sell them at any price ... though a small number from each batch go to Mimir for reasons neither are willing to explain.

Over time, Mani has slowly taken over responsibility for the clan’s calendar and has become something of a walking almanac. He knows off-hand the dates of the next Festival, can always remember when each stall in the Grand Exchange will be open, and effortlessly recalls whose hatchdays are coming up. He provides his clanmates with gentle reminders when required, and even offers suggestions for the perfect present. If someone opens a gift and exclaims, ‘How did you know?!’ the answer is almost always Mani. Yet he never takes the credit, and in fact insists that no one mentions it. By now, the whole Clan knows he is responsible, but they maintain the polite fiction of ignorance for his sake — and make sure to try and return the favour on his hatchday!

It is very rare to see Mani without his familiar, the large and apparently ferocious wolf Hati. Originally, Hati and his brother Sköll were contracted as protection for Mani and Sol on their journey to the Lundlaevungar. However, both wolves bonded almost immediately with the dragons, and Hati has been Mani’s faithful shadow ever since. He remains a fearsome guardian, and is the one creature in all of Sornieth to whom Mani sometimes entrusts his pearl. Though he is less overtly aggressive than Sköll, Hati is more likely to snap at perceived threats. Mani disapproves of the physical violence, which often comes without any warning beyond pinned back ears and raised hackles, but appreciates that it is an act of love. He therefore does his best to keep Mani from becoming agitated, and can often be seen stroking through Hati’s plush, silk-soft ruff of dark fur — an act that soothes both of them at once.

For the most part, Mani is a mild-mannered and thoughtful dragon who has proved himself a loyal friend and valuable member of the Lundlaevungar. Yet lurking beneath the affable exterior is a sharpness that seems at odds with Mani’s easy smile.

This is because Mani has a secret: he is actually a spy.

He was sent to the Starfall Isles by a clandestine intelligence agency, and told to embed himself in a small, unknown clan and await further instructions. Intermediaries arranged for him to escort and accompany Sol on her journey to the Lundlaevungar, and he used his connection with her as an excuse to stay.

At first, his friendliness was an act, but as time passed without word from his organisation, he fell into an ordinary routine and found that he liked it. No looking over his shoulder. Only a slight chance of being discovered, and little penalty if he was. A purpose, in the work he shared with Sol, and the growing knowledge that the connections he felt with both with her and with his lupine protector Hati were real ...

By the time his new orders finally arrived, Mani did not have the heart to continue as he once did: moving from clan to powerful clan in search of secrets he could sell, betraying everyone who tried to get close. Instead, he decided to fully throw in his lot with the Lundlaevungar and put his talents to use on their behalf — secretly, of course. He began to work as a double-agent on behalf of his chosen clan, feeding his one-time superiors a carefully-woven web of plausible lies, and establishing his new clan as a respected Arcane powerhouse that none would dare target for nefarious purposes.

Mani’s secret remains safe from most, even years later. However, after a time, circumstances made it prudent for him to reveal himself to Mimir, the smuggling mastermind. The two quickly became thick as thieves in private, though they maintain a front of mere acquaintance in public. They primarily communicate using coded letters written in invisible ink: Mani’s black candles are enchanted to make the ink glow, rendering the runes readable only in their violet-tinged light. This is why Mani is so adamant that the candles are not to be sold beyond the bounds of the clan. Of course, the letters they exchange mostly contain nothing more than chit-chat and harmless gossip, and in truth keeping their friendship secret serves little purpose, but they enjoy their subterfuge too much to give it up.

Mani enjoys his quiet life. However, he does sometimes get bored, and when this happens, he takes a short trip — ostensibly to visit a far-off market or an ‘old friend’, but actually to infiltrate another clan. These self-appointed espionage missions keep his skills fresh, but also serve an important purpose: they allow him to discover the wishes of dragons further afield. Upon his return to the clan, he quietly leaves a list and an address with Sildana, safe in the knowledge that she will ensure that the individual or clan receives a gift as soon as it can be arranged. Mani sees this as his way of thanking the clan for the inconvenience of being his latest target, as well as a way of using his powers for good.

On the very rare occasions that Mani’s spying uncovers a threat to the Lundlaevungar that he can’t deal with alone, or if his spy network reveals something that requires ‘official’ attention, he uses Mimir to pass on anonymous messages to the Althing Council. They are mostly addressed to Frigga, as the Clan’s head of diplomacy, though there have been times when Mani has sent his information directly to Loki or Thor if the issue required magic or might.
