INSIGNIA
The Pale Prince
A moon before Insignia's birth, Chell heard of a terrible prophecy: The Pale Prince will rise and, with a sword of light, slay the Beast the Night Alone Sees. The day Insignia opened his eyes, a silver rapier appeared on the bank, and Insignia's destiny was sealed. He has shouldered this responsibility all his life, taking his duties as Prince very solemnly. He filled his days with studying and training, away from the eyes of the people and servants. So rarely did he leave the Unseeing Manor that there was a rumor Insignia was a ghost, haunting the Manor.

But Insignia is no ghost- he is very much alive and strong. Like his parents, he has an air of solemnity and wisdom despite his youth, and his pastel appearance illuminates the dark forest around him like a lamp.

The sword glimmered in the rays that peeked through the stained glass, making it glow shimmering reds and dark hues of blue. It would have been beautiful, if it didn’t make Insignia sick to the stomach.

The thin weapon lay flat on Chell’s open palms. It reminded him of an overgrown, overbearing toothpick; thin, fragile, and something to throw out after being used. The silver metal sparkled in the sun, catching his eye and making him squint whenever it wobbled. The small dragon couldn’t help but narrow his eyes at the object of disgust, hoping that his gaze would make the thing explode, or melt, or vanish. He wished he could do a lot more.

His mother looked down at him; he could feel her gaze at the top of his head, intently watching his move. He faced up to meet her gaze, and she smiled warmly at him. Years of work and stress had aged her like a fine wine. Often his father would tell him about the time he and his mother had met, and he often described her as though she were an angel. Insignia would be able to see that, hold for the dark bags under her eyes and the weary way in which her mouth turned down at the corners of her lips, even while smiling. Insignia wished many things for her mother, none of them bad; he just wished that many things between them were different.

“My son,” Chell began softly, talking to him and only him. “I’m so proud of you.” He nodded, but couldn’t bring himself to meet her gaze. If only she knew. His mother constantly told him of his prophecy; this sword would supposedly bring down The Beast that everyone was so afraid of. But why did it have to be him? Why couldn’t it be someone else, someone with more skill, more talent, more will to get the job done? He was just… him. He wasn’t a soldier, nor the prophetic monster slayer like everyone talked about. He wished for many things, but glory from killing a creature was not one of them. Glory, sure, but maybe from being a renowned musician, for everyone to know his songs, to sing along to them gleefully. He was not a dragon of hurt and pain. He just wanted to make people happy.

And yet, that was exactly what he was doing. By taking the sword and accepting his fate, he would save everyone. Supposedly, that is. His armour felt stiff on him. He never liked the feeling of armour on him, too clanky and stiff. His crown felt heavy as well. It felt lopsided on his head, although he knew it wasn’t; it just constantly felt like that whenever he put it on. He felt like a mannequin, for a set of clothes to be put on display on something that it wasn’t made for.

“Today marks the day in which Insignia, of my own flesh and blood, claims his right as king!” Cheers echoed from behind him, but they were drowned out by the pumping of blood in his ears. Looking down at his gloved hands, he could feel his fingers shaking inside the thick metal. His hands and feet were so cold. Was this really happening?

He looked up at his mother again, but she was looking at the crowd behind him; he knew not how many people there were, but he could certainly guess. Everyone that knew of the prophecy. And most likely more. They were all there to see the new crowned king take his first step into slaying The Beast The Night Alone Sees. Everyone was counting on him.

Why him?

“Insignia.” His mother’s voice cut through his thoughts, sounding concerned. His heart skipped a beat as he let himself imagine, hoping that this would be the moment she asked him a question he had been dying to hear for years. Are you sure you want this? You can say no and this will not be your fate. We will love you no matter what.

“You have no idea how much this means to us. All of us.” His heart fell again, but he nodded, forcing a smile for his mother. He held up his hand to reach for the sword, and he felt the breaths of all the dragons behind him pause in wait. Tension built up; the air around him felt like it was made of thickly churned butter.

You can say no, he thought to himself. You can say no. Mother and father will understand. You can say-

His hand grasped the handle of the blade, and all breath that was in him escaped in a sob that was unheard due to the cheering and screaming of every dragon behind him. His mother stepped back as he continued to hold the sword in the air. He turned around to face the crowd; faces blurred together and he recognised everyone and no one at the same time. His arm made its way up unconsciously as he thrust up the sword, the fine blade slicing through the air. The cheering grew louder as he stood there for what felt like an eternity.

There was no turning back.
