High-pitched howls fill the night air; at the center of this noise, a youngling Mirror. Her cries form no true words, but the song they create is sad and beautiful... merging with the night wind and the dancing of the fireflies, you might even say the dragon is putting on a show. Soon enough, however, the howls grow quiet, and she lays her head down to rest.

A twig snaps. The Mirror's head jerks up, staring silently in the direction of the sound. A duskrat scurries out of the brush, blinking in the light of a glowing mushroom, twitching its whiskers.

The Mirror crouches, licking her lips. This could be her next meal. How long had it been? She couldn't remember. She stealthily sneaks forwards, wings tucked and claws ready- and she pounces, trapping the rat in her small talons and swiftly killing it with a claw to the throat. She gnaws on the creature with her tiny, dagger-like teeth.

~Tastes good... Food good. Food is good.~

After finishing her dinner, she curls up in a ball on the ground, suddenly exhausted. After all, she is still small.

~~~~~
The next morning is heralded by a few tiny shafts of light, forcing their way through the murky canopy. The young Mirror blinks open her eyes, and stretches her body in a huge yawn, her tongue lolling out over her fangs. She stands up, lashing her tail, and runs off into the dark forest.
Her wing snags on a branch, and she hisses in anger as she tries to free herself. The wood gives way, and she takes off again, this time a bit slower. Eventually she comes upon a rather large chunk of glowing fungi. Curious, she circles it, sniffing it like a puppy.
~Bi-oh-lu-min-ess-ant? Bio. Lumin. Escent. Hmm. Fun word. Big word. Wonder where I heard?~
In the corner of her vision, she spots a cave gecko. It scrambles across the soft ground, little claws gripping at the fallen leaves. The Mirror again lowers herself into a hunting crouch, pouncing at the small reptile. This time, she miscalculates the jump, landing to the right of the gecko. Terrified, the lizard's body lights up and it runs away in a hurry.
~Stupid bioluminescent...~
Already tired, she curls up beside the glowing mushroom. It makes her feel safe and warm.
The night is moonless, and the stars dare not show themselves through thick pine needles. A low snarl wakes the Mirror, and she sits upright, quick as a cat. As she moves her gaze across her surroundings, she finds a somewhat unnerving sight- a pack of Black Wolves has surrounded her like prey. She narrows her four eyes, drawing her mouth into a growl of her own. The lead male speaks.
"This is our piece of the forest. Leave this place, prey is hard enough to find as it is. Dragons are not welcome on this land, they steal our food and kill our young."
The Mirror locks her gaze with that of the wolf, her chest puffed out in pride. She's bigger than him, even as young as she is.
The wolf takes this as a sign of defiance, and rightfully so, for the mirror flares her wings in a battle stance and he leaps at the young dragon, teeth bared.
Time slows, and a memory rushes back to her...
~~~~~

"Hey! This is so cool looking. Isn't this one of those... bio... biolu... something mushroom things?"

"Bio-lumin-escent?"

"Yeah, that! They glow naturally. How great is that?"

The two mirrors grin and stare at the shroom in awe, before tackling each other in a mock battle. Soon, one pins the other to the ground.

"I stronger, friend!"

The other youngling, exhausted, stares into his sister's eyes.

"Maybe a little, but just you wait! We're going to be the strongest, and together we'll rule this forest!"

The memory rushes forward a couple weeks, the two sitting together in the dead of night. One is now different, yet in many ways the same.

"We're going to form the strongest clan together, but first... I have to go for a little while. You see why, right?"

The other blinks at the wreckage around her, understanding in her eyes. This was for both of their protection. She silently hugs her friend, wishing she could do something else to help.

"I promise-"

Before she can finish, her brother disappears into the dark, a blink of white among the shadows.

Time quickens again, and the huge wolf lands squarely on the Mirror's shoulders, claws piercing through scales. She screeches and bucks, trying to shake him off, buffeting him with her huge wings. His grip loosens only slightly, and he aims his jaws at the dragon's neck. Pain shoots through her like fire, and she rolls over, crushing him to tear away his hold completely. As soon as his claws release, she jumps away, zipping back to the mushroom, panting. Blue blood drips from her shoulders and neck.

The wolf, wheezing, sits upright. He glares at the Mirror with pure malice in his orange eyes. He then prowls around her, slowly, each step heavy on the forest floor. The rest of his pack hangs back, watching the fight with horrified fascination. A lone pup growls at both leader and dragon.

The Mirror's sight begins to fade, she's losing a lot of blood. She spits out a last hiss, and slumps over, exhausted.

~...I die now?~

~We're going to live strong together, but first... I have to go for a little while. You see why, right?~

The warmth of fur covers the little dragon, and her eyes close to take it in. The sound of the black canine's anger seems far away.

~I promise I'll find you again... I will!~

The Mirror's four eyes blink open, glowing with an intense violet light. Her pain disappears, dark scars covering the place where she was bitten and scratched. She leaps up, ready to fight again.

The pack leader growls, and pounces once more. This time, however, his target dodges, and he lands in the pine needles. A purple aura radiates from the Mirror's claws, and she does not miss- she tears into the throat of the wolf, killing him instantly.

His once-burning eyes lose their light and stare into nothingness. His group runs off, leaving behind that single pup, who is now terrified but too small to catch up with its family.

The glow dissipates from the Mirror's eyes and claws, and she looks at the fallen wolf with a horrified expression. She glances at the pup.

~I... What? This isn't...~

The pup waddles over to the dead beast, nuzzling into his fur. They both shine faintly in the light of a huge mushroom.

~Food... I am hungry. I need food...~

She walks over to the two wolves. The pup yelps and runs off, though that's probably for the best, considering what the Mirror is about to do. Certainly, it would never be good to waste such a huge meal... even one like this.

By the time she finishes, there is nothing left but a pelt and most of the bones. She spends the next couple of hours cleaning the pelt, preparing it for use as a cape. Bug by bug, dirt by dirt, she meticulously runs her claws through the fur, scraping the meat off the leather. Eventually, she deems it mostly-clean, and puts it on. It's a bit big for her right now, but she is certain she'll grow into it soon. Plus, it covers her scars.

Finally, she buries the bones of the leader, using his skull as a grave marker. The pup pops its head out from behind a bush, and bounds over to the grave, sniffing the skull as the Mirror sits silently off to the side. It then tilts its head, staring at the dragon.

"You kill daddy?"

~....Oh.~

"Er... Yeah. I guess I did. Sorry bout that."

"It's okay. They said he was mean wolf."

The pup crawls over to the dragon and curls up beside her, eyes closing slowly.

"You Kali... The black one."

It then slips into a silent sleep.

"And you are Nyx, the night."

Although she is exhausted, Kali must do something before she drifts into dreams- she must howl. Her song is meant to bring the dead wolf peace, to show him that he would live on as a leader- But this time, alongside his daughter and a mighty dragon. When her song is done, she curls around Nyx, and sleeps.

Kali's pelt gives off a slight smell of rotten meat, tinged with a strange sweet scent from rolling in glowshrooms. Her own scent is often overpowered by this, but if she were without her pelt for a particularly long length of time, she would smell like, in her own words, "a well trodden path in the forest."

Years passed. My clan started small- beginning with a single, ridiculous, beloved Fae. It took time and it took effort to grow, but grow we did, for now we sit in a chamber fit to house a battle of the deities. Over a hundred clanmates strong and ever multiplying. But, in the deepest corners of my mind, I can't help but shake that I'm forgetting something... or someone.

Oh well. Nothing a moonlit jog can't fix.

BbxrSS9.png

*Crash!* Something knocks me down hard with a blow to my side, sending me careening through the leaves. I jump to my feet, immediately staring down my assailant. A familiar scent hits my nose, and I suddenly relax, feeling an immense sense of relief at the sight of the imposing figure before me.

"...Harou? Is that really, truly you?"

There, in the faint light, stands a gigantic white wolf. His head towers above me despite my none-too-small stature, and his pelt is marred by old battle scars- albeit, doing considerably better than the fur I wear to this day. As I watch him, his glistening fluff melts into the air, leaving behind what could be the tallest, most happy Mirror I've ever seen.

"ZYLAH!"

A tiny light goes off in my head, reminding me of my parent-given name. I almost correct him, but in the moment I'm too happy to think about it.

He pounces on me once more, taking great care not to use his claws. We tumble through the brush in a bouncing heap of scales and long-dead fur, so incredibly elated to see each other that no thoughts cross our minds aside from being here in this moment.

"Zylah, I'm so glad I've finally found you, it's been so long! I... I really missed you."

"I missed you too, you big goofball."
