Dawn light creeps over the horizon, landing gently on the tips of the tallest pines. Most of the color is blocked by the needles, but every few feet you might find a crack in the canopy, sunbeams glinting against the sharp pinestraw along the forest floor. In this low light lies a small Fae, fins laid against his neck, creeping stealthily towards a juicy mantis. His claws silently tap the dirt in excitement.

"This time... This time I'll catch it for sure."

He leaps at the insect, catching it in his long talons. The scythe-like blades on the creature's arms get a scratch in on the Fae, but he quickly returns the favor by eating its head.

"Stupid bugs. Such difficult prey."

At that precise moment, a huge buck bursts through a bush right behind the Fae. The beast leaps over him, its eyes wild with fear. Only a moment later, two more massive creatures crash through in chase- a wolf and a bigger thing that kind of looks like a wolf with wings. The bigger thing raises its head in a screeching howl, then lowers it to move quicker. Finally, in a small clearing and not too much distance, the creature pounces on its prey, sending the two crashing to the ground. The wolf skids to a halt and delivers a deadly bite to the hoofed-animal's neck.

Terrified and nearly faint, the little Fae sits low to the ground with his body over the insect carcass. Looks like no one saw him; a welcome advantage to having a small size. However, as he tries to sneak away and ready himself for flight, his foot lands on a small twig, creating a startlingly sudden sound. The wolf-beast raises its head in alarm, and turns until it is staring right at him. Then, it speaks.

"Who dares step foot in my land? Come closer, I'm more inclined to attack if you hide."

Deathly afraid now, the Fae grabs his prey and drags it forward into the clearing. He tries to act brave, but his fins are laid flat against his neck in fright.

"M-my name is T-Tarin, and I'm a traveler with no past and no h-home. I catch what I n-need and move on."

"Interesting. Fae are insectivores, they do not feed on my prey or the flora that it feeds on in turn- they pose little threat to me as loners. Tell me, Tarin, what do you see when you gaze upon me?"

Now that the forest is calm once more, Tarin gets a clear look at the thing before him. It appears to be a Mirror, with an extra long tail and a massive wingspan. The voice's tone suggests a female, and a fierce one at that. A dark wolf pelt covers her face, shoulders, and back like a fluffy shroud.

"You look like a Mirror, miss. A v-very big Mirror."

The Mirror looks to her wolf companion, who lifts its bloody maw to stare back. They both nod, the wolf returns to its feast, and the Mirror brings her gaze back to the Fae.

"That's good to know- I've never been quite sure of what I was before now, as I haven't met one of my own since... er, aside from my brother, of course, but he's a bit different. Mirror has a nice ring to it. I think we'll get along perfectly, Tarin- I am the one called Kali, Winged Wolf of the Wood. Nice to meet you."

With that, she tears into the deer's stomach and chows down, leaving Tarin too stunned to move. While his instincts scream at him to fly away, something inside him says otherwise... So instead, he returns to his own dinner.

Weeks pass, then months. Tarin lies curled into a ball beneath one of Kali's wings, sound asleep. The beastly Mirror sleeps with two eyes open, watching to make sure no enemies are near. She'd taken the Fae as a sort of prisoner servant, but recently had begun to truly care for him. At this point, she'd risk her life to protect him from harm. Nyx sleeps beneath the dragon's other wing, gently snoring. The sound brings to mind happy puppy growls.

The small rustle of leaves brings Kali to full alertness. She raises her head quickly, scanning the area for signs of movement. She locks her eyes on a large bush, the leaves quivering as if alive. A violet paw steps out of the brush, testing the ground; then a big, fluffy head slips out. Its eyes are glazed and its mane greasy, clearly unkempt purple fur sticking out in clumps. Kali watches in silence as the Fangar makes its way across to a large mushroom, settling under it to take a nap. The thing creates a racket louder than any puppy growl while it sleeps, waking the small Tarin.

"K-Kali? What's that noise?"

"Just a Fangar, no need to worry. It poses no threat; in fact, if I'm being honest, it looks too injured to even fight."

Kali's voice causes the furry creature to stir in its sleep, clearly unsettled. Tarin, curious out of his mind, sneaks closer to check it out, ready to jump if things turn sour. He grabs a very long stick and pokes the Fangar on the ear. It growls loudly and opens its eyes- it appears almost blind. Then, noticing the Fae, it yawns and drags itself to its feet, painfully slow. Tarin hops backward a couple feet.

"Hello, young dragon. My name is... is... uh... Taco! Yes, that's it. I think. Why did you poke me?"

"Uhhh..... I'm not exactly sure, Mr. Taco sir, I guess I just wanted to see your magnificence awake?"

"Magnificence? Lad, I'm nothing of what I once was. I used to be king of the jungle... now I'm no more than a greying furball. I've been looking for a place to spend the rest of my years, though... do you know a place?"

Tarin turns his head to look at Kali, a wide grin plastered across his face. It was a 'can we keep him?' sort of look. She sighs, nodding.

"You can stay with us then, Mr. Taco, if you like? We haven't really settled down yet, but Kali's wings are really big and can shield you from any storms. Surely we'll find some place soon!"

"Well... if you're truly okay with it, I guess I can stick with you. Hopefully my old bones won't slow you down too much."

"Great! Don't worry, we'll get you cleaned up and feeling better in no time!"
