Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Vetrissa

Vetrissa's a peacemaker, plain and simple.

Or, perhaps, it would be plainer and simpler were she not the sole dragon that everyone who comes to the Celestial Citadel trusts implicitly. And I do mean everyone.

Once upon a time, Vetrissa was a mercenary. Gemma ran into her a few times near the end of her career, but she came back to Chiaroscuro long before Vetrissa's fame became something to be reckoned with. Even now, however, Gemma keeps up with who's who in the business, so I've been more up-to-date with Vetrissa's exploits than most of the dragons in the Celestial Citadel's employ.

In a startlingly similar vein to Sibylline and Shockwave, Vetrissa is a powerful storm mage without being a lightning dragon. She doesn't have as much raw strength as they do with their abilities, but she is far more versatile and prone to sneaky tactics rather than a straight-up barrage of lightning. Her uncommon abilities and tendency to get the job done no matter the cost earned her more than a few friends. When she made questionable decisions, she stuck by them. When she defeated her rivals, they never resurfaced. When she spoke, her words were heeded.

Very few survived being at the wrong end of her magic or her temper, and Vetrissa was a popular hire for over a century.

And then, one day, she was gone. Off to the Starfall Isles like she hadn't spent almost her entire life east of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The reason for the move is still hotly debated, and Vetrissa's tight-lipped about most of her employers, so only her closest friends may ever know for sure. All that's known for certain is that she set up shop in Hoverview Vale and became one of the only official liaisons between the various mercenary guilds in Sornieth, the widely-known nobility in the eleven realms, and the various kings of the underworld.

Her self-promotion to an office that so few would even think about was an abrupt change of pace; it would have been easy to be concerned for her longevity in the public eye. However, Vetrissa continually proves herself as ruthless in her peacekeeping work as she did in her mercenary days, and now her client base exceeds those of all but my most well-informed and oldest clan members.

Vetrissa moved to Chiaroscuro after Sidra and Nexus began officially operating out of the Citadel, since the Hewn City has proven itself to be the place to be if one is in Vetrissa's vein of work (barring some of the depths of our central Sea, of course). She, Vidale, and Kelaadeos have something of a grudgingly respectful rapport with each other, and the three of them are often seen trading information or getting drinks at Hotel Contraste to discuss business. She's also rather fond of my son, Ditaeus, and were he of someone else's blood, I have no doubt she would have attempted to make a move on him by now.

Most days, however, she spends most of her time with her contacts and her best friend Dorian (who is the smartest, snarkiest familiar I've ever had the pleasure of spending time with), and she keeps the gears of the Citadel turning even on the rare slow days. She's the steady hands of the operation, and everyone knows it, trusting and respecting her for it in equal measure.
