The Venomous

Nathra hatched into a Plague Clan steeped in its own traditions. The Clan made its living by trapping, taming and trading familiars in the Scarred Wasteland: a dangerous and thankless occupation that made the dragons who practiced it as hard as the life they lived. Though both her parents were Wind dragons by birth, they were no exception to the rule. The Clan did little that was not for profit, and that included raising nests of hatchlings. They had enough mouths to feed without the dead weight of hatchlings who could not yet work and would bring no value to the Clan.
So Nathra was unsure, growing up, whether she was simply a mistake - or whether her Clan had some hidden purpose behind her hatching.

She was raised by the Clan as a whole: although she knew her parents, they were no more affectionate or kind to her than any of the others. Although she would never say she was treated badly, the truth was that, as a hatchling, she was cared for only a little better than the familiars. As soon as she was old enough, she was put to work: at first feeding and tending the more docile familiars and then, as she learned from observation, taming the wilder animals. Although the affection of the familiars she trained was no substitute for the love of a family, it was enough.

As an adult, Nathra learned that her particular Plague mutation is venom. Although it is not lethal, apart from to very small or weak prey, it is capable of knocking out more familiars with a single bite. It has a similar effect on dragons, though the severity depends on both breed and constitution. This made her a valuable hunter for the Clan and she was soon engaged in familiar trapping as well.

Nathra often travelled to markets with her Clan to sell on the familiars she tamed. One day, at a market they frequented on the border between the Scarred Wasteland and the Starfall Isles, her path crossed with that of a handsome young Spiral by the name of Jormungandr.

He spotted her Shattered Serpent familiar - similar to his own Shadow Serpent - and used this as an excuse to start a conversation. The two chattered together amiably until Nathra was inevitably called away by the Clan leaders and ordered to start packing up the crates ready for the journey back. Sadly, she bade Jormungandr farewell: she had enjoyed talking with him and been captivated by his optimism and obvious love of life. His world - surrounded by a family who loved him, allowed to pursue his own interests even if they were not profitable - sounded so different to her own, and she had wanted to talk more. Although he promised to return on the next market day and find her again, she did not believe she would see him again.

However, Jormungandr proved her wrong: he made the journey to the edge of the Scarred Wasteland in time for the next market, and the next, and the next after that. He brought her small trinkets and gifts from the Ctystalspine Reaches, and bought treats from the other market stalls for the two of them to eat.

Despite Nathra’s fears that her Clan would not allow it, the two grew close. She began to look forward to market days close to the Arcanist’s lands.

Then, one evening, the Clan Elders summoned her. They informed her that she was now of the proper age to be mated and, at the next market, they would begin looking for a suitable match - who was willing to pay the right price.

Enraged that she was to be sold off to the highest bidder, no better than a familiar, Nathra railed against their orders - but it did no good. She was locked up in a cage meant for a Hippogriff, and remained there until they reached the market, bundled under a cloth so that no one would see how her Clan treated one of their own.

She heard them bargaining with various dragons for her: the strangers argued that her plain platinum scales and mismatched eyes were unfavourable; while the Elders reminded each of them that she was young, and strong enough to work, and had great skill in training familiars.

Knowing that there was no way out - her Clan would not let her go unless it was profitable to them - she called her Shattered Serpent to her. Using a torn corner of the cloth covering her cage as parchment, and her own blood and a claw for ink and a pen, she scrawled a note to Jormungandr, explaining the situation as best she could. She gave the note to her Serpent and instructed him to take it to Jormungandr, hoping that he would be there to receive it, and hoping that her Clan didn’t stop her familiar as he wound his way to their usual meeting place.

Eventually, the market day drew to a close. The negotiations for Nathra ended at the meagre sum of 8,888 treasure. Nathra bit back her tears at the thought that she was worth so little: she would not show any sign of weakness in front of her old Clan, or her new owner.

When they finally unlocked her cage, she emerged to look at the dragon who had bought her. It was an Arcane Fae. He gave her the option of bidding her family farewell, but Nathra refused to even look at the Clan that had sold her, like an item of property, into a life as little more than a brood-mother. She left the marketplace and her Clan behind and followed the Fae back towards his home, to meet the dragon who was to be her mate.

However, all was not lost: the dragon who had bought Nathra was Loki, Jormungandr’s father.

Jormungandr had received Nathra’s message and taken it straight to his father, who had in turn approached the Elders of her former Clan and enquired about the best offer. He had then offered almost twice the amount, and the deal had been brokered. Nathra could scarcely believe that Jormungandr’s Clan, who were all strangers to her, had spent their hard-earned treasure on buying her only to tell her that she was not their property and could do as she wished - including leaving the Clan if she so wished.

With nowhere else to go, and believing them to be a good Clan, Nathra decided to remain with the Lundlaevungar.

Over time, as she shed the mentality of her old life and grew to love her new Clan. She became much happier, more eager to have fun, and much more outgoing. Her relationship with Jormungandr also blossomed. They are happiest around each other: the sound of their laughter is part of the Lair’s background noise, and they can most often be found chasing one another through the sky around the Lair, or tying themselves in knots as they play-fight together.

Nathra now looks after the Clan’s familiars, particularly those which are particularly large, ferocious or unfriendly, as she enjoys the challenge of earning their trust and friendship. She also enjoys paying back the Clan that gave her a home with her skills, and often sells on the familiars the Clan cannot keep.
