     Eos the Cook

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Eos shrugged her wings, her hands at work cracking peas and making sure she didn’t scorch her garlic. She fanned the flame on the ground with the wing on her hip.

“Edamame,” she answered.

“Ed’s a mommy?”

The dragon two seats down snorted into his soup. The Fae who’d misheard looked up, first at the dragon and then at Eos. She knew she was imagining it, but she thought his eyes were wider. Faes didn’t react to things that way.

Eos chuckled, and looked away from her food for a moment. “No, no, edamame. It’s a bean.” She fished a bean from the little bowl on the counter and slid it over to him. “That.”

“You’re kidding me.” Despite the monotone, she could hear the surprise in the rise of his fins. Working in a multi-species tavern for almost 50 years taught her how to communicate well, even with Faes.

He picked up the bean in both hands and gnawed on it, somewhat like a squirrel. All of the other dragons on the bar watched as though his opinion on the bean was of monumental importance. Eos went back to her work while the Fae rapidly flicked his tongue over his sharp teeth and lips.

He smacked his lips and observed, “Dusty.”

“Roasted, yes.”

The dragons went back to their business, most of them eating or drinking. Some of them were chatting, but it was a quiet night.

The Fae put down his bean, bitten in half, and held out both his hands. “Another?”

Eos is quite okay with living a life “behind the curtain” as it were, never doing anything too exciting herself but meeting exciting dragons as they pass through the Stopover. She has always been a good cook, though not quite good enough to stand out among the amazing chefs elsewhere in Sornieth cooking for kings.

These days, her interest is mostly consumed by the dragons she meets at the Stopover. An on-again, off-again flame named Faelen is one of her prized visitors, but she knows that both of their past relationships might keep them from being anything more. She enjoys the little dramas that play out in the tavern, and gossip seems like a major part of her job. After all, many dragons that go through have no real home: couriers hop from place to place and miss a lot of the “interesting” things that happen in a clan’s daily life. The closest thing they can get is Eos’s updates on the other couriers’ love-lives, families, and work. Eos will even complain about her own lack of mobility from time to time, even though nobody feels much sympathy. She’s clearly happy where she is.

Aside from this periodic complaining, Eos really is happy where she is. She has a good schedule, a nice room above the Stopover, a fun boss, and great customers. Eos firmly believes that a dragon can be happy just about anywhere… To Eos, there is nothing more powerful than the mind, and she’s come to the distinct conclusion that she is the master of herself: her fate and her emotions. That she’s chosen what others might consider a dull fate, well? That’s their problem. Not hers. She’s chosen to be happy, and she is. Very much so.

For a Light dragon, Eos is not very concerned with truth or learning… except, of course, where other dragons’ personal lives are concerned. She does spend most nights reading in her room, but these are mostly flights of fancy and tales of adventure rather than anything academic. She figures she spent too much of her young life trying to be cerebral like other Light dragons to waste any more time on something she doesn’t enjoy. She’s done pretending. She knows who she is. She knows because she chose.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Visitors to the Stopover are familiar with Eos’s floracat, Tea Leaf. She’s very friendly and enjoys head-scratches, chin-scratches, back-scratches, and most other kinds of scratches. However, her loyalty is clearly to Eos. Tea Leaf is almost like the beloved mascot of the Stopover at this point, roaming the grounds like she owns them. She is useful, keeping the ragamice and duskrats from getting into their food and scaring off pesky birds. Still, most of the time she lounges in front of the fire and accepts all the love and adoration the visitors have to offer. Perhaps she really does own the place.

━━ interactions ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Spring's Breath Faelen is one of the couriers that makes frequent stops at the tavern where Eos works. Though the two definitely have feelings for one another, Eos has little hope it will turn into anything other than on-again, off-again flings. Years of listening from behind the counter revealed that Faelen was very hurt by his previous relationship. He would have liked to stay with his former mate for the rest of his life, but she disagreed. Eos keeps a respectful distance most of the time, but doesn’t consider herself the type for monogamy. That’s what she tells herself, anyway.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Eos’s surname is Hurricaneheart. She shares it with her mate, Faelen.
»
» Even though she enjoys meeting world-wanderers, Eos has no real desire to see the world herself. She’s more than happy to stay at the Stopover.
