Shay

Shay has trouble remembering exactly where she came from and why she left. She remembers that she had sisters once. She remembers stories of the almighty Windsinger that somebody must have told her when she was quite young. All she knows for certain, though, is that she followed the wind, and the wind brought her to this new life.

The wind carried a certain sound, a certain scent, a certain feeling that turned her east and west. She was looking for someone; some dragon out there needed her, and she felt in every scale of her body that she needed to find them and protect them from the dangers of the world. That particular feeling in the wind caused her to pause one day and scrape out a small den somewhere in the Windswept Plateau. It was quite, quite small, but it was her own. She designed it to fit her own tastes and needs. She was proud of it.

Shay had just settled down to rest in the comfort of her new home when a young, somewhat short Guardian named Grayson bumbled up to the entrance, saying, "Hey! This is a really neat lair! Can I come in?" Although at first she was adamant that this stranger was not under any circumstances going to enter her home, Shay eventually let Grayson in to take shelter for the night. Grayson began to compliment Shay, telling her she had "wings the color of midnight" and "eyes that carry the spirit of the wind." Shay thought he was absolutely cheesy, but one night turned to two, and then to three, and then... as much as Shay hated to admit it, she was in love with a goofy green Guardian who couldn't stop taking naps.

Shay is always alert for the dragon who will become her charge. She has run into many runaways, castaways, orphans, and otherwise wandering dragons who didn't turn out to be her charge, but she adopted them into her lair anyway. These newcomers, along with Shay and Grayson's growing family, now live and work together in a larger lair in the Reedcleft Ascent. Shay oversees everything, ensuring her clan is safe and has everything it needs to survive. She would call herself the matriarch, but that makes her feel old.

Now that the clan is so much bigger, she has delegated some of her responsibilities to her eldest daughter, Faron, and she is also training her daughter Medli to help with the day-to-day operations. Shay presides over the clan with a firm claw, but she also likes to relax and chat with her friends Stirling and Eulalia.
