Carotene is an orange photosynthetic pigment important for photosynthesis. They are responsible for the orange colour of the carrot, for which this class of chemicals is named, and for the colours of many other fruits and vegetables.

Carrots were originally purple! Modern orange carrots originated from the Netherlands in the 17th century.

Eating large quantities of carrots will NOT help you see in the dark! The myth was started in WWII to cover up the use of radar technology - propaganda claimed that the British RAF's success was due to eating carrots.

Eating too many carrots can result in one's skin turning orange. This condition is called carotenemia.
