Rio spent a long time on his own. His entire past is unknown, but what is known is that when he showed up at Vixen's Clan, he was running from something...dark. At that time, he labeled himself as a 'murderer' and warned others to stay away from him. Of course, if you read his origin story, you'd know that that didn't keep Moonchild at bay. Perhaps because of her obvious trust of him, the clan knew to trust him as well, for she was telepathic and trustworthy.
At first, he disliked this. He found the clan strange and wanted no part of it. He didn't trust any clan and believed none should trust him. He didn't understand why they were so eager to welcome him into their home and family. Of course, back then the clan was much smaller--it was long before the clan even intended to leave the Crystalpine Reaches. Vixen was never afraid of him, being a tough gal herself, and gave him the opportunity to join one of their Coliseum teams.
He didn't stay on there long, but he appreciated the experience. He also appreciated being given the chance. Over time, Rio became very comfortable in the clan. As more dark, strange, and uncertain dragons joined the clan, he realized he wasn't so different after all and could relax.
Although he is no demon, he is an original resident of the Demonic Woods. After all, he is seen as an original member of the clan--a longtime resident that others respect and revere. He finds this almost laughable (as he sees himself as no role model) but he also appreciates being seen as more than he saw himself when he first joined. He was the first member of the clan to show that your past doesn't define your future.

Relationships:

Rio had never been a very social dragon, and even now he has few friends even though he has been in the clan for a long time. Moonchild was definitely his first friend here and is the closest friend he has ever known. This Lightning Pearlcatcher was the reason he joined the clan, after all. If it weren't for her telepathy and overall instincts, he probably would've died of starvation and wouldn't have felt regret for that at all. Before he met her, he considered himself as someone dark and untrustworthy and pushed any potential help away. He believed he deserved to be outcasted, despised, and feared. He didn't want to be any of those things, and she knew he didn't deserve to be them either. Her unrelenting stubbornness at making him see his true potential was frustrating at first, but he eventually grew to accept and welcome her attempts.
Over time, he became almost as confident in himself as she was in him. He also grew very fond of her. Even now he is uncertain of his sexuality, but he admittedly loves her. He would not call her his 'mate', as she would not call him hers, but he treats her as though she is one, and any stranger dragon would assume they were mates. The clan is not even totally sure what their relationship would be called, but many in the clan do not care for labels anyway so do not bother about them.
There was a time, many moons ago, that he laid a nest with her. There was nothing wrong with this nest, but just the experience was very underwhelming for both of them. Both of them were very aloof and agreed that they weren't really cut out to be parents, at least not at that time. Their offspring all left to serve the Arcanist and they felt little if no separation anxiety at their departure. Both agreed that perhaps one day they will lay another nest together, but there is no rush and they feel no necessity for that now.

Although at first he was very wary of Charizard (because of their first meeting), Rio soon grew very familiar with and comfortable with this Arcane Wildclaw. To be honest, they are very different from each other, so it's very odd that they became so close. But friendships don't always make sense. Charizard would never have met Rio if it weren't for his friendship with Moonchild, so perhaps it's thanks to her that they're friends. Whatever the reason, they have each other's backs. They share no bromance, nor are they always seen side-by-side, but they will protect and defend one another if such a need arises. Rio is still such a loner (and introvert), and is not one to seek out affection or engagement with others, so it is usually up to Charizard to arrange hang-outs. This has never been a problem, however, as Charizard is an extrovert and enjoys his time spent with Rio. And even though Rio is never the one to initiate a hang-out, there's no denying the pleasure and contentedness on his face when Charizard shows up to his neck of the woods.

Rio is not necessarily attached to his familiar, not in the way many in the clan are to theirs, but the clan has never seen him with a different one. The Red-Breasted Hainu by his side was the first familiar they ever saw him interact with, and they have never seen him even take a second glance at any other kind. No one is really certain how or when the two bonded, but they seem equally aloof towards the other, despite always being within a 100-mile radius of each other. Then again, Rio seems pretty aloof to his other companions, despite being 100% loyal to and protective of them.

If there were any others in the clan that Rio felt more than a clan-member connection to, it would be Terra. Terra was one of two dragons that he got to know by battling alongside them. He, Terra, and Cobweb all formed a Coliseum team around the time he first joined the clan. Their team didn't last long--mostly because Cobweb lost interest, but because of that experience, he has always felt as though he could trust Terra. She's the Clan Teacher, after all. A fine Arcane Fae that is only slightly older than himself--which is rare to find as he is quite old (older than many in the lair). Cobweb, a Shadow Ridgeback, inevitably left the clan to serve the Arcanist, alongside her mate, but Terra is still the same as she was and has no intentions to leave. Whenever he needs advice, he goes to her, and she always appreciates and welcomes his company.
