Lore
Lapis was never content with the knowledge that Snappers can't fly, she just loved the sky too much. From a young age, she would sneak out of the lair to stare at the stars. She mapped constellations, recorded movements and moon phases, worked and scrimped and saved every penny to buy books and charts and star maps. When she came of age, her parents sent her off with a parting gift - a beautiful telescope. It was the most amazing thing she'd ever seen, a miracle of glass and copper, fashioned by the finest artisans in the Observatory. It remains her most prized possession. She visited Arcane territory, hoping to look through their massive telescope and perhaps exchange some discoveries, but she found that she couldn't stay long, the Arcane magic there affects any dragon, and despite being willing to risk maybe just a little magical influence, per parents beseeched her to find other ways that didn't risk her physical or mental health. One thing she did learn was that other astronomers flew high to do their work. Even on cloudy nights, the others merely flew up above the cloud cover, skimming atop a sea of fluffy clouds, the stars unobstructed and magnificent. She was filled with a sense of deep longing. She had always wished to visit the stars, but being raised in a family of Snappers, she had always recognized it for a dream. Seeing others freely fulfill her one desire while she stayed firmly planted to the ground made her heart ache. But there was no way Lapis was ever going to accept that Snappers can't fly. She set of for Wind territory, for who had a better knowledge of flight than they? However, without Wind elemental magic of her own, there was no way. Her Earth tendencies only weighted her down further. As she was leaving, she saw the gustborne balloons that children played with, lifting them into the air lightly as they jumped about. She studied one, sure that they would be the key to her flight. She took her idea to Amaranthus and Poppy, a pair of craftsdragons from a clan by the name of Clan Cottontail, who had worked with her own clan many times, and together they worked out a plan. Lapis roamed far and wide, gathering materials. She traded with silkworm keepers in the Viridian Labyrinth, and weavers in the Sunbeam ruins to turn it into fine silk. She approached the Fire clans of the Great Furnace for their flammable gases, and the basketweavers of the Zephyr Steppes for their light but strong bamboo baskets. In the end, she had her balloon. She spends as much time as she can in that balloon, peacefully soaring high in the sky, charting and mapping, or just enjoying the wondrous view. Her dream had at last come true. She took a room in the Cottontail Clan where Poppy and Amaranthus resided, so that they could easily repair and maintain her beloved balloon, and when that clan disbanded, she took on with Clan Snastle. In exchange, she lends her knowledge to the clan, and has her own desk in a section of the library where she records her findings. She also reports back on any pertinent information gleaned about less celestial happenings she may have spied on her travels. |
