Zachariah, an adventurous denizen of the Wind Flight, had long harbored an abiding desire to traverse the Fire Flight and land on the outskirts of the Lightning Flight. He was industrious, determined, and he hoped to have the opportunity to prove it. He hoped, in short, to join the Lightning Flight.

With the Thundercrack Carnivale on the horizon, he decided it was time, and with many friendly farewells, although a few were skeptical--"the Lightning Flight, but aren't they such a bunch of hard workers?"--Zachariah set off.

Normally skilled at flying his hot air balloon through tumultuous winds, Zachariah met misfortune in the hot updrafts from the Fire Flight's regions and, in many instances, had to manually maneuver by pulling his basket along by a tether. In between updrafts, he sat in the basket and deplored his progress. A glider might've served him better--this was a lot of work!

Overheated and struggling to breathe in the smoky air, he pressed on. During the middle of his crossing, he encountered--to his intense discouragement--acid rain, which damaged his hot air balloon. Struggling to keep it aloft, he used his breath to keep it full, steering and

flapping from the side of the basket. What might've been an altogether hurried descent turned into a slow trek across the remainder of the Fire Flight. Wearied, he finally allowed the hot air balloon to leak its air without replenishment. As he neared the ground, he leapt free and circled down to land, soot-covered and streaked, in front of an astonished fellow Skydancer wielding forge tools.
