He is dressed in fine clothing and wears a fashionable hat. He always carries a red rose, the universal symbol of love and passion. He cuts a most noble and chivalrous figure.
This tends to intimidate most dragons. “Someone so wealthy would not have time for me. Someone so magnificent would think me beneath him.” But those who approach Angelus, whether by accident or design, find themselves in for a pleasant surprise. This dragon is as noble and refined as he looks. Guardsman or gravedigger, cobbler or queen – all are treated with the same kindness and courtesy.
Some dragons have mistaken Angelus’ elegant manners for weakness. The more uncouth of them mutter, “Look at him parading around in his fancy clothes, spouting off his fancy words. He speaks of honor; he speaks of justice. Words on the wind, I say! They’re nothing without deeds to back them up.”
Angelus would certainly agree with that last sentence – and indeed, he would support it with his actions. For this dragon is as skilled on the battlefield as he is with manners and words. It takes a lot to anger him, but woe to those who incite his wrath. His attacks are unending, relentless. In many cases, he will not stop until his foe dies or yields. He is a gracious winner, and always treats defeated foes with courtesy. There are no harsh words for those he is forced to slay – only regret.
Because of his expertise in combat, many dragons have approached him with offers of leadership: “You’d be a successful general!” “You could lead us all to victory!” “You’d conquer that clan in one fell swoop!”
Angelus is always visibly discomfited by these urgings. “I’m no leader,” he declares. He can and will take charge when his clanmates are threatened, but once the crisis has abated, he goes back to being his usual quiet, gentle self.
This has spawned ugly rumors among other dragons. Why would such a great warrior be uninterested in glory? “You could do more good on the battlefield,” shrewder dragons coax him. Angelus always shakes his head and declines. “Not necessarily,” he disagrees. “There are always better ways to do good.”
Angelus is not a young dragon. He has lived in many clans, yet somehow, it’s hard to trace where exactly he got his start. Many dragons whisper that he has an unsavory past, misdeeds that he is trying to hide: “The good manners, the gentle words? They’re just for show! You can’t trust anyone that nice; he’s after something, mark my words....”
That may be. But for now, Angelus continues to be a credit to his clan and a blessing to those he meets. He is the perfect dragon – but was he always so perfect? And will he always be?
