Nana entered the Sunstruck Bakery on something of a whim from Cinnabon. The Imperial saw the young Nocturne in the Auction House, newly hatched and wary of all of the shoppers perusing the market that day. Nudging her mate, she gestured to the young, chocolate colored female with a smile on her face. Tiramisu seemed doubtful, about to remind the Imperial of their first adopted daughter and the struggles they still faced daily with her, but the hope in his mate’s eyes silenced his protests. He nodded and stood outside of the stall at the market, watching as she negotiated the price for this potential employee.

The Nocturne watched cautiously. She, like many others of her kind, had been found as an egg in the wilderness. Her egg had been taken to the merchant’s lair, cared for, incubated, and carefully groomed for sale. The merchant clan relished her temper and her wit, they didn’t try to subdue her. Instead, they taught her simple fighting techniques, and gave her a basic education before allowing her to leave their lair. She was not sad to leave, she had been informed early on that this would not be a permanent home for her, and so she held no expectations of being allowed to stay.

And so when the female Imperial came to inquire about the cost of her tutoring and traveling costs, she was not surprised. The rippling brown Imperial and her teacher came to an agreed-upon price, and the Nocturne was motioned up to the front of the shop from the cushion on which she had been resting. Clattering beside her, the handle gripped in her teeth, was a sword almost as big as she was. Her gait was awkward, and it made a terrible screeching noise when the edge of the blade scraped against the cobblestones of the pathway, but she stubbornly refused to leave it behind.

Cinnabon acquiesced, and picked the young dragon up in her mouth by the soft folds on the back of her neck. She brought the Nocturne up to Tiramisu, who, despite his worries, had the warm glow in his eyes he always got around hatchlings and young dragons. The mates nodded to each other and lifted into the sky, flying home to the bakery.

“Your clan leader thinking about leaving their job”

Nana's claws clicked against the stone floor of the lair she shared with her youngest sibling in an agitated rhythm as she walked in circles. "I'm not cut out for this, Twist. I thought I was ready but," her gravelly voice trailed off, although she never stopped her pacing. "Maybe they were wrong about me. Coming to the Wyrmwound was a mistake. I can't even control Banoffee, how can I command respect if my own kin can get away with challenging me to battle every moon."
She stopped and clawed at the ground, her frustration momentarily marred by satisfaction of the squeal her talons produced, the strength of her limbs. The faint purr that was growing in her throat turned into a growl as she turned abruptly and resumed her pacing.

Twist, sitting beneath the brightest glow basket in the room, watched Nana's progression thoughtfully. Both were still quite young, but Twist had spent far more time with their father, Tiramisu, much to their mother's chagrin. She had learned his patience, and had adopted his habit of offering only a few, soft words. "Has Banoffee ever won one of these challenges?"
"Never" Nana hissed, stopping to bare her teeth at the thought. "And she will never. Not as long as I still walk this land."

"Who do you think leadership would fall to, should you surrender?"

Nana stared into the shadows of their shared room, contemplating. Banoffee had been showing signs of the capacity for compassion, and caring. She had been caring for the tortured little fae that stumbled upon their territory shortly after they arrived, and caring for her well at that. Would that be enough to convince Cinnabon and Tiramisu that her madness was waning? Would it be enough to make them think she could be trusted?

The Nocturne shook her head, her troubled red eyes clearing as she faced her Pearlcatcher sibling. "No one. I will never surrender leadership."
