{Lore}

When Artifice was just a hatchling, her father was slain before her by a beast clan warrior. A centaur Berserker had cut her father’s life short and left her with his body. Days passed before anyone happened across the sad sight. By then the poor Nocturne was starving and weak, crying as she was taken from the body of her father. The tundra was buried not too far away from the new clan’s doorstep, where others from a deadly attack many moons prior were buried.

For months, the young nocturne remained quiet and unwilling to interact with any of the members of the clan. She had never known her mother, and now her father was gone. She rarely strayed from her room in the lair, keeping the room nearly pitch black at all times. She took to gathering plants with purple petals, and the occasional glowing mushroom. Star moss lined the ceiling and cracks in the walls, with various other bio-luminescent plants dotting the room. Most that entered the room trying to talk to her were never able to find her to do so.

Artifice had become nearly mute, refusing to speak to anyone. More often than not the nocturne was not even in her room. She had mastered the art of sneaking out of the lair. On her own she ascended into a better fighter than her father had been, crushing any creature to cross her path until she finally destroyed the centaur herd that was passing by their clan territory. After she had done that, a small Wispwillow Peryton had approached her. After soothing the nocturne, the creature introduced herself as Caprea. The Peryton was one of the first to ever hear Artifice speak at that point.

Caprea acted from then on as a sort of caretaker to the nocturne, since her thirst for vengeance leads her to having issues with self-preservation.

Becoming a hunter takes time. It takes skill and patience, and a deadly sense of conviction that ending another life is the right thing to do. It also takes strength, something Artifice found herself lacking for far too long. She wasn't strong enough to save her father, and she wasn't strong enough to keep herself at his side long after he drew his last breath. Strength failed her in those early years, and stealth arose in its place. Where power was lacking, fierce secrecy formed the pieces of Artifice's armor, and she withdrew, curling into herself to find the person she needed to become.

At first, her search led her nowhere. Sneaking out of the lair by the light of the waning moon was something anyone could do with just a little forethought and skill, and picking fights with the more harmless, if unpleasant, denizens of the Tangled Wood was the work of an angry child throwing around weight it hasn't grown into yet. Artifice learned quickly that these were futile displays, good for no one but herself, and thus she refocused her efforts. She trained hard, aiming to fly further and faster, to hurl blocks of wood and heavy stones harder and farther. Every inch of her body was toned into a weapon until she could fight among the best of them, if only she chose to associate with anyone else.

But that could have been her downfall, and only the presence of her faithful shadow saved her life. Too proud of her newfound strength, too righteous in her quest for vengeance, Artifice disappeared into the night to pursue a herd of centaurs at the edge of Clan Dark-Blood's territory. She believed with her entire heart that they ought to quake in fear before her, and that they had no chance of besting the fury raging in her bones.

She believed, but that was not the truth of it.

Outnumbered by centaur after centaur, all armed with swords and bows and spears, Artifice never stood a chance. They tossed her aside with only the barest effort and galloped away, leaving her to die alone, too far from her clan to seek help. Hallow's intervention kept the worst at bay, though. Impossible to track, and nearly impossible to detect, she hadn't known that he followed her, as he had been since the day they met, some of his Guardian heritage still pushing him onward. Nonetheless, he was there, and he witnessed the near-slaughter. He also carried her home and never said a word to anyone about the matter, not even after she was fully recovered.

Truthfully, any passerby might have saved her, but she has always known it was Hallow. Who else could follow her so soundlessly and never come forth with the truth? So she watches him. She heals, and she watches him closely, trying to decide if she can tolerate his constant presence.

So far, she has decided to let it go, but only as long as he does not keep her from her revenge. That is more important than her life, whether he believes it or not.
