Biography

rDQ0ik6.png

The darkened streets came as no surprise to the skydancer. These were familiar stones she walked across.

The distant whinnies of the nightmare, the carrioncorn...there were nothing but background noise to her reality. She was silent as twilight, slipping down the paths and through the buildings, ever vigilant, ever watchful to the enemies around her. Each time something approached her, any time something thought they could get one up, her wings caught the blow, the soft trill of a warning from the gloomwillow at her side having warned her to the oncoming danger. Slowly, she would wait. Absorbing each blow, biding her time, until with a flash she could cut down everything in her path.

Not a single being stood before her and survived. Not for long, at least.

Maleficent lowered her head, letting the hood pull further over her eyes, listening to the gloomwillow's whispered voice, letting her know where the nearest enemies were, where she would do the most good.

Her clan members were nearby. They did not worry about her, and she knew she need not worry about them.

She continued on.

---

Among the others, Maleficent was a dragon apart, but it wasn't something she concerned herself with. If the others were concerned--confused--intimidated--that was for them to worry about, not her. She had been brought to the clan for one purpose, and one alone: to walk the ruins, and to leave them cleaner than she found them. Often someone would attempt to question her about her past, her parents, something about where she might have come from, but she had no answer but silence for them. If she had known her parents, she did not remember them now. Other drakes would approach her, tentative and unsure, asking if she might ever seek a nest with someone.

Again, she met them only with silence. She was a warrior. They thought she had time for nests? Hatchlings? Who did these drakes think they were?

But didn't she want a family? A line to continue on past her? they would ask.

What need did she have for a family line? No one lived before her, and no one would live past her. She was a warrior; any ties to the rest of the world would only prove as a weakness. She could still remember fragments of her past: making her way through the world alone, seeking shelter where she could, relying on the unknown hospitality of strangers as they left behind their junk, only for it to turn to treasure in Maleficent's eyes.

She resisted others even then. The skydancer would support herself or die trying, and those around her knew that she would prefer the latter over accepting any kind of help. That is, those that kept an eye on her long enough. It was common that by the time anyone thought they might understand her...she would be gone.

---

A nod to another in her clan, as the team rushed for the humid underbrush of the mirelands. Her wings tucked closer to her, twitching at the thought of attempting to traverse that kind of terrain. Each of their group--loosely assembled though they were--had a particular skill set for the worlds around them, and she was more than pleased to leave the marshes to those who flourished in them. She had seen some of the other venues they commonly clashed against the beastclans in, but still the ruins of the old city called to her. Perhaps it was because it seemed to hold the history her own life lacked. Much had happened on these cobblestones: blood spilt, alliances forged and trust betrayed, promises made and hearts broken. She could feel it on the air, in the stones, through the lights and shadows cast around her.

She was a ghost, and this was a ghost-lit town. It suited her.

"Maleficent." Her head tilted just enough to let whoever it was speaking to her know that she was listening. "It's time."

Her gaze straightened again, and after a moment she cast her eyes up to the skies, the stars, the faint wisps of clouds left from the day. Another night. Another trip through the ruins, and another chance to prove herself to...well, whoever was listening, she supposed. Gladekeeper's will that she was here or not, she wasn't sure. One thing she knew for certain: they might make home in the Lightweaver's city, but this was the realm of the Shadowbinder's minions.

And she did not fear the dark.
