╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
"..." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Silent, secretive, and mysterious even by the standards of the Indigo Court, this nocturne is referred to only as "the Scion"--though, scion of what is anybody's guess. In that same vein, it is not entirely clear what the Scion does at the Court, of if she fulfills any role at all. For the most part, she appears to do little more than idle around various parts of Anan. At least, that's what is often said, though if pressed on where exactly she was seen, what exactly she was doing at the time, most dragons will find themselves unable to answer--though they swear they remember the feeling of her eyes passing over them, her gaze as lightless as the streets of the Hewn City. In spite of the Scion's unsettling and stoic demeanor, she has a particular way with hatchlings, and often spends more time with them than their own parents; this has earned her the tongue-in-cheek designation of "wet nurse." While hatchlings are drawn to her regardless of origin, parents from Clan Athema, unlike those of the Court, are reluctant to let their children get too close to her. It is hard to blame them, when after spending as little as an afternoon with the Scion, their hatchlings return to their nests with empty eyes, expressions warped by unnatural, vapid smiles. For all that, dragons' efforts to keep their children from the Scion usually come to naught, as any attempt to prevent a hatchling from returning to her after their first meeting results in vicious, uncontrollable tantrums, even in hatchlings that, before then, were exceptionally gentle and well-behaved. Many parents have been seriously injured in their attempts to control their suddenly unruly children--and at least one dragon has been killed. It can take as long as a week for the hatchling's anger to finally subside (and most parents relent and allow their children to continue their visits with the Scion before then) but when it does, they will always be back to normal--and will have no memory of ever interacting with the Scion in any way. At least, until they are inevitably drawn to her again. Knowing the consequences of letting hatchlings near the Scion, a few dragons from Clan Athema have questioned members of the Court about their willingness to let children associate with her. Court dragons just shrug off their concerns. Just about everyone in the Indigo Court grew up playing with the Scion, they explain, so what could be the harm? By now, most Athema dragons have stopped making inquiries of the Court, particularly with respect to the Scion. It has become too hard to tolerate their strange, dazed expressions--their consistent, too-similar answers. Better not to speak to them at all. At least, that's what they say--but every day, they still allow their hatchlings to roam freely through Anan, and when they return, the families do their best to ignore that with every passing night, their children are less and less like they were the day before. Though it is a talent she rarely demonstrates, the Scion is an exceptional mage, and has even shown the impressive ability to limit the influence of the Shade in affected individuals. Consequently, she has offered Abalone her aid in suppressing his affliction, in addition to teaching him how to better manage it himself. The two usually make time to meet once a night (the Scion is most active after dark) and will sometimes practice their spells into the wee hours of the morning, at which point Abalone (and it is always Abalone, for the Scion never tires) will finally have no choice but to excuse himself to get some sleep. Though she deals with him silently and eerily, Abalone cannot deny that being treated by her magic has left him feeling much, much better. And also much, much different. But mostly better, he tells himself on days when he finds that he has scribbled unfamiliar words and images into his logbooks, paragraphs of notes shorn through by his claws--on days when the names "Anukh" and "Crag" sit stale on his tongue, feeling suddenly unfamiliar and strange. Mostly better. |
