Alistair
The Bloodline

quote
About
Alistair is the oldest of The King’s sons, borne by a consort. As a consort’s son, he was raised by a midwife for his early years and lacks a true mother figure. It is unclear from which mother Alistair and his brothers were born, or whether they are half or full brothers, because all of the consorts shared the same breeding cycles and pooled their eggs. Perpetually seen as a disappointment due to his lack of ferocity and weak combat skills, Alistair was the least favored son. The King would often command Alistair and his younger brothers to fight in order to prove themselves—this frequently resulted in Alistair’s humiliating losses and painful wounds that led to deep, unhealing scars. The King's disapproval in Alistair seeped through the Coatl Clan, and even though Alistair was a royal son, he was often regarded with quiet disdain from other clan members.

Before Mercury’s takeover, Alistair was one of the overseers of the seafood caste. His other two brothers were strong and unforgiving to the gatherers, but Alistair had a tough time being a bully, as he does not share in the sadistic streak prominent in The King’s bloodline. He had a hard time bringing himself to beat them when they returned with a poor harvest, as was the usual fare with his brothers, but Alistair would routinely bully them in order to quell his anger at his father and the rest of the clan for looking down on him. It deeply dissatisfies him that the lower caste does not give him the proper fear and respect.

Alistair’s brothers were eager to be part of the decadence and fancy living of the Coatl Clan elite. None of the King’s sons had an enriching hobby, which led to their pent-up energy and overeagerness to fight. Often, after a meal, The King would gather his sons together and pit them against each other, to "teach Alistair how to fight." In his father’s mind, if Alistair were tough enough and actually wanted to succeed, he would manage to not get beaten up. There would be no backing down in these fights—Alistair’s brothers and father would stop when they were satisfied, not when Alistair was injured beyond fighting back.

Alistair has a strong relationship with Nova, whom he subconsciously views as a father figure, since Nova would often offer him advice and guidance while Alistair was growing up. Alistair follows Nova's instructions without question, trusting that while Nova's plans may not initially appear to make sense everything will eventually fall into place. Nova sees hidden potential in Alistair as the descendant of the King with the most common sense and knowledge to not drive the clan into the ground with unsustainable decisions. Because of this, Nova views taking Alistair under his wing as a positive thing, and he tries futilely to find something Alistair has a talent for.

Mercury has little trust for any relation of the King's, but she was willing to spare Alistair post-coup at the pleading of Nova. Nova reasoned that since Alistair was the only surviving gathering overseer, he knew the seafood gathering rotations and how not to overfish the Rotrock Rim’s already meager pools. Mercury only agreed to spare Alistair as she perceives him as weak and no threat to her, not because of his fishing knowledge.

Alistair grew immediately attached to Nessa upon her arrival as she did not look down on him like so many of The King's underlings did. During her grooming as a consort for his father, Alistair and Nessa became friends. She did not share the same disdain the rest of the clan had for him, and he quickly became close to her. After Nessa’s injury, she grew to rely on him more, and slowly, their relationship turned from platonic to romantic. Whenever possible, both will sneak off to a secluded meeting point at the Rotrock Rim, where they spend their afternoons daydreaming and fantasizing about how they would kill Mercury and become King and Queen of a new clan. This is a flight of fancy for Alistair, as he does not quite comprehend how serious Nessa is about actually killing Mercury.

Post-coup, Alistair and Dorian work under Nova on a relatively-unknown project. The pair travel around the Scarred Wasteland seeking lone dragons and hatchlings, and lure them back to the Wyrmwound Grottoes where Kolya claims to delivers them to the Plaguebringer. Rumors fly through the Grotto about what happens to these dragons once they vanish with Kolya into the off-limits corridor; some say he sacrifices them in an elaborate ritual. Others whisper in hushed tones that he cooks and eats them. One fanciful mind has suggested that the Plaguebringer herself waits at the end of the corridor to welcome these new dragons into her service. Alistair prefers not to think too hard about it.

Trivia
  • Alistair actually enjoys his shifts as fishing overseer since being around water calms him. After the discovery of the underground lake, its shores became Alistair’s new go-to haunt.
