The Light-Bringer
The Light-Bringer
Sol is a little ray of sunshine. While this is true in the metaphorical sense, thanks to her cheery disposition and endless optimism, it is also literal: her pearl glows with both warmth and light, a miniature sun cradled in her arms. It is therefore a surprise for most dragons that Sol is not a Light dragon. She actually hatched on the sunny shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and, though she feels little connection to Water’s prophetic tradition, it is because of a premonition that she joined the Lundlaevungar. Like most Water hatchings before the Tidelord’s disappearance, Sol and her clutchmates were taken to the Shoredeep Presage by their parents to look into the pools there as part of their coming of age ceremony. Sol peered into the holy waters, not expecting to see anything at all — and was shocked when a bubble floated up and showed her a vision of a pink crystal lair far off in the Starfall Isles! This remains the one and only time Sol has experienced foresight and been able to recall the images presented to her. After lengthy discussion of the portent, Sol’s clan sent her to the Crystalspine Reaches in search of what they saw as her destiny. Unwilling to let their precious daughter make the journey alone, her parents engaged the services of a chaperone, the enigmatic but charming Mani, and a pair of guardian wolves to accompany them. Sol was at first terrified of the golden wolf Sköll and his dark brother Hati. They seemed unbearably ferocious, snarling and flashing teeth at even the possibility of a threat, and her flinching wariness was only compounded by Sköll’s obsession with her unusual pearl. However, over the course of their long journey, Sol’s feelings began to change. Hati had attached himself to Mani, and in watching her undaunted escort and his wolf, she learned to better understand both wolves’ moods through body language. They were not always angry, as she had once thought. Sometimes a growl could be playful, or even something like a contented purr. She began to hear the mournful beauty in their nightly songs. Eventually, she realised that Sköll was not being threatening when he walked close beside her and gazed up at her: there was loyal adoration in his eyes. It was utterly unearned, and Sol decided in the moment she first saw it that she would put aside any lingering doubts and do better by the familiar who had chosen her. By the time the travellers arrived at the Spire, Sol and Sköll had developed an inseparable bond that went both ways. He remains fiercely protective, and she regularly scolds him for growling at strangers, clanmates, familiars … in fact, everyone but Mani and Hati! Sol takes it as the expression of love that it is and laughs at his ridiculousness as she smoothes down his raised hackles. The only one not surprised to see her fearlessly fussing over her furious familiar is Mani, and that is because Hati behaves in much the same with him. In private, Sköll is almost unbelievably soft. He especially likes to curl himself completely around Sol’s pearl, tuck his nose under his tail and go to sleep. Because of her sunlike pearl, it seems appropriate that Sol became the clan’s lamplighter. Each day, she rises with the dawn to light the many lanterns that illuminate the lair’s interior, and frequently patrols to ensure that wicks are trimmed, oil reservoirs topped up and guttering candle stubs replaced. As well as lighting the lair’s public spaces, Sol crafts the means to do so: she is a skilled chandler, and her signature unscented beeswax candles are known for their steady and long-lasting light. Her efforts make the Spire a bright and cosy home for all who live there. Though Sol is responsible for keeping the Spire lit by day, her friend and counterpart Mani takes over through the night. He extinguishes Sol’s bright candles and keeps a smaller number of dim Stardust Sap Lamps burning in the corridors and stairwells until morning. This was not always the case. Originally Sol was meant to do both. However, the rhythm of Sol’s internal clock lies in sync with Sornieth’s sun: she wakes with dawn, but finds it hard to stay awake long after dusk. She is often fast asleep long before the rest of her clan mates, and therefore struggled to make the switch from day to night lighting at the appropriate time — or even at all. Some nights, the day’s candles were left to burn out until the Spire’s inner halls fell into pitch darkness. Mani, who is naturally inclined to stay up late, noticed what was going on and began to quietly cover for his friend. Eventually, Sol confided her troubles in him. She was exhausted from attempting to change her innate schedule and frustrated by the complex process of refining sap into oil. Mani came clean to her about what he’d been doing and offered his help, not only with the lanterns but with oil production if she showed him how to do it. Sol gratefully accepted and the pair have worked in harmony ever since. When they first met, Sol was flustered by Mani’s good looks and developed quite the crush. However, for his own reasons, he guided their acquaintance to bloom into friendship rather than romance, and her infatuation eventually faded with no regrets on either side. These days, Mani is like a brother to her, closer than any member of her hatch-family, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Sol is also surprisingly good friends with Heimdall, and often can be found chattering to him at the Spire’s entrance when she takes a break from her duties. They enjoy talking about Water traditions together. Though he is very serious, it never takes much convincing from Sol for him to combine his Light magic with her Water magic to create rainbows for fun. |
